At one point or another in every fighter’s career, they are paired up against a lesser known opponent where they have much more to lose than to gain. In the case of UFC bantamweight contender Urijah Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC), that’s the exact situation he finds himself in against unheralded Brazilian Yuri Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 26, which goes down Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. Currently ranked among the top 135-pound fighters in the world, Faber is on the cusp of a title shot after back-to-back submissions of Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen in February and April of this year. With an impressive resume under his belt, one would think “The California Kid” had intentions of facing the highest profile opponents possible in order to move up the ladder. Instead, Faber took a fight against someone looking to take what he’s got and doesn’t offer much in return. The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate has yet to premiere on Fox Sports 1, but the UFC is already working on the season eighteen follow-up. UFC officials on Wednesday announced tryouts for TUF 19 would focus on middleweight (185-pound) and light heavyweight (205-pound) fighters. The initial tryouts will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 27, in Indianapolis, ahead of the next day’s UFC Fight Night 27: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 event at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indianapolis gets ‘TUF 19′ tryouts Aug. 27 for middleweights, light heavyweights

Open fighter tryouts for Season 19 of “The Ultimate Fighter” are slated for Aug. 27 in Indianapolis, with 185- and 205-pound fighters invited. Middleweights also were featured on Season 17 of the show, which was coached by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger Chael Sonnen . But the last time light heavyweights were contestants on the show was Season 8, which was coached by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir , with Ryan Bader emerging as the winner. Indianapolis’ Westin Hotel will host the tryouts for the show, which is expected to begin filming in early 2014 for a broadcast later that spring on FOX Sports 1.

Guan Wang will be looking to extend the 11-0-1 record that marks him as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in China, when he takes on Brazilian Sandro Da Silva (3-2). Their rematch will headline RUFF 10 on Aug. 24 in Shanghai. The event, which is set for the Hongkou Indoor Stadium, also sees the return of Zhang Meixuan and Rodrigo Caporal, who, like Wang, were crowned inaugural RUFF superfight champions in February. Meixuan (5-1) won the flyweight strap and will be returning to action to take on Ya Fei (1-1). Lightweight title winner Rodrigo Caporal (9-4) has won five fights out of five for RUFF and will be looking to continue this winning streak when he goes up against Russian wrestler Rasul Khairulaev (1-0).

Shinya Aoki Showdown Brewing, but Bibiano Fernandes Expects One FC Unifcation Bout First

Bibiano Fernandes is the ONE FC interim 135-pound champion and there has been talk of him moving up to featherweight for a super fight with Shinya Aoki , but next on the agenda for the Brazilian appears to be a unification bout in October or November. “I will be fighting in fall. I’m not sure who I am fighting next, but considering I am the interim champion, I’m assuming that a fight with Soo Chul Kim would be my next step,” said Fernandes. I’ve watched his fights. He’s a tough guy, but I need to feel him in the ring to decide how good he is.” One swing of Chris Weidman’s left hand put proposed UFC superfights on hold, but ONE FC has a potentially huge match-up of its own with its two best pound-for-pound fighters, both capable of competing at featherweight. Aoki (33-6-1) is on track to make his 145-pound debut later this year, while Fernandes (14-3) has already proved he can compete in the division by beating four separate opponents to win the Dream Featherweight Grand Prix in 2009. A featherweight match-up between these two would truly be a battle for pound-for-pound supremacy in Asia and Fernandes is not ruling it out

Since signing with the World Series of Fighting last year, welterweight Josh Burkman has worked his way into the position of being one of the promotion’s top 170-pound fighters with two wins in two fights for the company. As Burkman told MMAWeekly.com , getting to this point was his objective from the beginning. “My goal was to go in and win fights against top competitors and become a feature guy in the organization,” he said. “(President) Ray Sefo and (matchmaker) Ali (Abdel-Aziz) promised me they’d go out and get top talent and they’ve done that. “I’m real excited about the show, their deal with NBC Sports Network, and I think we’re headed in the right direction.” Burkman will get a chance to prove he’s tops in the promotion when he takes on fellow former UFC welterweight Jon Fitch on Friday in Las Vegas, live on NBC Sports Network. The bout is a rematch of their initial fight seven years ago. “The only thing that carries over is I remember getting beaten up by a very good fighter,” chuckled Burkman.
