Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo May Have Suffered Broken Foot in UFC 163 Title Fight

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo defended his 145-pound title at UFC 163 on Saturday by defeating “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung , but may have suffered a broken foot early in the title bout. “When the fight started the first thing I did, I kicked him and he put his knee, so the first time I kicked him I don’t know if I broke my foot. I don’t know, it is very swollen,” said Aldo during the post-fight press conference. “He knew that I was going be giving him low kicks, so the first combination I think he left his knee there. I kicked straight at his knee. I don’t know if I broke my foot. It’s very swollen. I can barely walk properly,” he added. The titleholder attended the post-fight press conference, but departed early to go to the hospital and have his foot evaluated. Kicks at a high volume are typical when Aldo fights, but he had to make adjustments early on to deal with the foot injury. “I had to change my strategy. I had to totally change it,” he said. “We tried to control it in a different way. Everyone already expects for me to be kicking low kicks, but I’m a complete fighter. I always try to practice everything,” said the champion. “Whereever the fight goes, I always try to use all my weapons. I don’t only have one weapon. Bellator MMA’s “Summer Series” finale, featuring a pair of title fights and a pair of tournament finals, has a main card that is official for Wednesday night. In the main event of Bellator 97, lightweight champion Michael Chandler (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) puts his title on the line against David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BMMA), while welterweight champ Ben Askren (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) defends his title against Andrey Koreshkov (13-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) in the co-main event. All four title competitors came in under their allotted weights. Chandler and Rickels each were 154.6 pounds, while Askren was 169.9 for Koreshkov, who was 169.2. Also on the main card, the “Summer Series” four-man light heavyweight tournament draws to a close when Muhammed Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) meets Jacob Noe (12-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) to determine next in line for the 205-pound title. And in the heavyweight tournament, Ryan Martinez (10-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) meets Vitaly Minakov (11-0 MMA, 2-0 BMMA). Lawal and Noe each came in on the mark at 205.6 and 205.7 pounds, respectively. Martinez will have a sizable weight advantage at 262.8 against Minakov, who was 239.1

SEATTLE – It’s only been two fights, but it’s hard to argue when Dana White talks about the old Robbie Lawler vs. the new Robbie Lawler. Lawler (21-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) on Saturday knocked out Bobby Voelker (24-10 MMA, 0-2 UFC) with a vicious head kick early in the second round at UFC on FOX 8 at KeyArena Seattle. It was just his second fight since returning to welterweight after a long run at middleweight. But those two fights – the latter of which came on live national TV on FOX – have been impressive enough to already have folks talking about where he fits in in the welterweight title picture. Sure, at 5-5 in his past 10 – 3-5 in Strikeforce, including a 185-pound title fight loss to Ronaldo Souza in 2011 – few are saying he should be next in line.

When asked how much he had to convince Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler to sign a new long-term deal with the Viacom-owned fight promotion, Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney put it in terms everyone could understand. “I can tell you that every single time Michael and I go out to dinner for the rest of our lives, he picks up the check,” Rebney told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). That sounds just fine to the unbeaten Chandler (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BFC), who told MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday that he’d agreed to a new multi-fight contract with Bellator – one which Rebney insisted would make Chandler “one of the highest-paid lightweights in all of MMA.” The new deal comes just a week before Chandler is slated to defend the Bellator 155-pound title against Season 8 tournament winner David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BFC) at Bellator 97 on July 31. It also comes at a time when Chandler had roughly a year left on his existing Bellator contract, according to Rebney. The new contract will keep him off the free agent market and with Bellator for years to come, both men said in a phone interview.
