Dana White Assures that UFC is “Not Doing Away with the Fight of the Night Bonuses”

How much people make, no matter their profession, is almost always a topic of contention. Nobody ever makes enough, and everybody could always use a little more. The UFC is no different. UFC fighter pay has been one of the hottest topics around for quite some time, but has been rekindled recently, especially with UFC veterans like Jon Fitch and Jacob Volkmann publicly discussing the matter. The discussion hit a fever pitch that had UFC president Dana White considering doing away with the promotion’s traditional “Fight of the Night” and discretionary or “locker room” bonuses. The bonuses are typically issued on the basis of performance for fighters that UFC officials felt had an entertaining or heartfelt fight or particularly exciting finish.

Mark Munoz sees his life through “different lenses” moving into his next fight, which follows a months-long battle with depression. The 35-year-old UFC middleweight not only has a better sense of his psyche, but what others in his profession go through in the peaks and valleys that accompany an MMA career. “Before, when I saw people going through depression, I thought, ‘Man, they just need to suck it up,’” he told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “Now, I’m a guy that has compassion [for] people, because it’s real, and you don’t know what kind of circumstances that are going on in their life.” Munoz (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who’s scheduled to meet Tim Boetsch (16-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) at UFC 162, spiraled downward after a loss to Chris Weidman at UFC on FUEL TV 4. Injuries then put him on the shelf for nearly a year and cost him a No. 1 contender bout. Unable to train, he ballooned to 260 pounds . “I was like ‘Fat Bastard’ in ‘Austin Powers,’” he joked. UFC 162 takes place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Bellator heavyweight Ron Sparks ‘ opportunity to redeem himself for his first professional loss didn’t go exactly as planned. Scheduled to fight Kevin Asplund at Bellator 69, he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he was scratched from the card when an on-site medical worker used the wrong-sized cuff to measure his blood pressure, which incorrectly gave readings he was unfit to fight. “If you use a regular-sized cuff on anyone that has big arms like mine, it reads like crazy,” he said. “It was just bulls–t, but I wasn’t feeling good regardless. I had a double ear infection and I felt really sick. But once I got to the hospital and they used the correct cuff, my levels were completely normal.” While annoying, Sparks doesn’t get too bent out of shape when such inconveniences take place. He still looks at his career in MMA as a hobby rather than a serious profession. It’s a trade that’s been good to Sparks, even though he has yet to face ranked competition. “I own a construction company, so I don’t have to fight to pay my bills,” he said. “Not at all. I just love to fight.

Swayze Valentine is wrapping hands, patching cuts in male-dominated profession

Maybe that’s why Swayze Valentine waffles between a few different terms when trying to describe the role she’s occupied for the past couple years. Sometimes it’s cutperson. Other times it’s cutwoman, or even cutgirl, as she’s known on Twitter
