Suffering through a five-fight losing streak, former WEC/UFC featherweight Leonard Garcia recognizes what he’s been doing wrong. “I had a couple fights where I had been doing the same thing I’d done before and wasn’t moving forward with things I should have,” he said. “I was relying too much on landing the big punch.” Not only does he feel like he was doing the wrong thing in fights, but also in training, thus Garcia has been working with a new team. “I’ve had the same training partners for the last seven years and it kind of felt like going through the motions every camp,” Garcia told MMAWeekly.com. “I got complacent. “I’m going to out to Alpha Male and training with some of those guys: Duane Ludwig, Urijah Faber, Lance Palmer and all those guys. It’s really changed my game all over again.

function not found Invicta FC returned to the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City for its sixth event, but its first on traditional satellite and cable TV pay-per-view. Company president Shannon Knapp couldn’t have picked a higher profile event to make the move to PPV, as a rematch three years in the making headlined the fight card. Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Marloes Coenen first met three-and-a-half years ago with Cyborg, then the Strikeforce 145-pound champion, winning by way of TKO stoppage in the third round. On Saturday night, they met with the inaugural Invicta FC featherweight championship on the line. The belt that was on the line was about the only difference from their first fight to this one. Much like their first fight, Cyborg was clearly still the much more aggressive, stronger, and more powerful fighter. Coenen opened strong, attacking with leg kicks and punch combinations, but it was evident from the first round that Cyborg was in full control of the fight

(This story appeared in today’s edition of USA TODAY .) It’s no small thing to build a new weight class in the UFC. But if what’s going on in the 145-pound division these days proves anything, it is that patience pays off. UFC 162 on Saturday featured two fights in the featherweight class — one between ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (16-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC) and Charles Oliveira (16-4-1 MMA, UFC 4-4-1), and another between Cub Swanson (20-5 MMA, 5-1) against Germany’s Dennis Siver (21-9 MMA, 10-6 UFC). Both bouts won $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses. UFC 163 in August will be headlined by another featherweight bout, this one for the title, as champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defends his belt against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC). The debut event on Fox Sports 1 in Boston two weeks later is set for at least four featherweight bouts, including Ireland’s up-and-coming Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC). It all adds up to what could be a breakout summer for the division that, as recently as three years ago, was deemed not quite good enough for the likes of the UFC

World Series of Fighting 3 drug tests come back clean

All 18 fighters who competed at this month’s World Series of Fighting 3 card tested clean for performance-enhancing drugs and recreational drugs/drugs of abuse. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today received the drug-testing results from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the June 14 event at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main event saw former UFC fighters Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman meeting in a welterweight bout. It was Fitch’s debut with the promotion after being unexpectedly released by the UFC earlier this year. Burkman clipped Fitch with a punch early in the fight in an exchange, knocking him off his feet. Burkman immediately pounced him him and locked in a standing guillotine choke. He dropped to his back and held the choke until Fitch went limp – when he released the hold, stopping the fight himself. The fight has become controversial because of referee Steve Mazzagatti not seeing that Fitch was out and stopping the fight himself.

Bellator 96 Results: King Mo Lawal Moves into Tourney Finals; Babalu Sobral Retires

Bellator 96 took place at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., on Wednesday night, setting the finals for both the promotion’s light heavyweight and heavyweight Summer Series tournaments. Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal avenged an early exit from the Season 9 tournament by making quick work of Seth Petruzelli in the Bellator 96 main event. An accidental headbutt stalled the fight in the opening moments, but when action picked up, Petruzelli tried to chop Lawal’s legs out from under him with low kicks. Lawal, however, caught one of the kicks and planted Petruzelli back down on the mat. Lawal stood up, timed his move, and dove in with a punch that put Petruzelli’s lights out… one punch, no muss, no fuss.

Bibiano Fernandes going forward with no regrets after choosing ONE FC over UFC

But that’s his style: no regrets. Fernandes (14-3) this past month won ONE FC’s interim bantamweight title with a five-round unanimous decision victory over Koetsu Okazaki (8-3-1) at ONE FC 9 in the Philippines. But Fernandes said his opponent’s “sneaky” nature may have led to the way the bout played out over 25 minutes. “It was a very good fight,” Fernandes told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “He tried to move around and come forward to punch, but I went in there and did my best.

It took just over a minute for King of the Cage cruiserweight champion Wes “Soldier” Combs to successfully defend his title at KOTC: World Championships on May 25, raising his winning streak to four fights in a row. Following the game plan set up for him by coach Rob Nickerson of Reaction MMA, Combs knocked out Esteves Jones and finished his third fight out of four in fewer than two minutes. “My coach planned it all out and he told me to stick to the game plan, trust it, and that’s exactly what I did and I knocked him out,” said Combs. “The game plan was basically to go forward and throw the right hand. He liked to throw a lot of hooks, so I just had to beat him to the punch. So when he kept doing it, I stuck the game plan and dropped the right hand every time I saw him flinch and landed it on the button.” Ever since Combs relocated back to Kentucky and began working with Nickerson, he feels he’s peaking all over again. “I feel like the best I’ve felt in years,” said Combs
