NSAC suspends Brian Bowles nine months, issues $5,700 fine for UFC 160 failure

The Nevada State Athletic Commission today suspended UFC bantamweight Brian Bowles for nine months and fined him 30 percent of his UFC 160 purse for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio. Bowles, who lost to George Roop via second-round TKO, is suspended retroactively to the event and forfeits $5,700 of his $19,000 purse to the commission. Unexpectedly, Bowles was present at the hearing and said he had no idea why he failed his test, according to ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto , who attended Bowles’ hearing today in Las Vegas. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, the NSAC expected to proceed with its disciplinary complaint without Bowles in attendance , as the fighter hadn’t responded to a written notification of his drug test failure and a temporary suspension.

Main-card fighter Robbie Lawler ($156,000) and preliminary-card competitors Melvin Guillard ($84,000) and Ed Herman ($74,000) earned the biggest disclosed paydays from this past weekend’s UFC on FOX 8 event. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today obtained the salary/fight-purse information from the Washington State Department of Licensing. UFC on FOX 8 took place July 27 at Seattle’s KeyArena, and the main card aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson , who submitted John Moraga in the night’s main event, tied for the fifth largest disclosed payday on the card. He earned $58,000, which included a $29,000 win bonus. The total disclosed payroll for the event was $850,000. The 145-pound title fight between Marloes Coenen and Cris Cybog official. Veronica Rothenhausler, who was scheduled to face Mollie Estes, was deemed medically unfit to compete on Saturday. Estes weighed in and will get her fight purse. Livia Von Plettenberg, Tamikka Brents and Jessica Penne were given two hours to make weight for their match-ups. The 26 fighters competing on the Bellator MMA 96 fight card on Wednesday night at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., weighed in on Tuesday making the semifinals of the heavyweight and light heavyweight Summer Series Tournaments official. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal takes on Seth Petruzelli in the main event, hoping to rebound from his knockout loss to Emanuel Newton in his last outing. Two preliminary fighters, Derek Campos and Keith Berry, failed to make with and will forfeit a percentage of their fight purse to their opponents, but will still compete on the card. Ex-UFC welterweight Jon Fitch responds to Dana White’s fighter-pay comments

Welterweight Jon Fitch cut a video today to respond to UFC President Dana White’s angry rebuttal about his tenure with the industry-leader. Responding to White’s assertion that he made $302,000 in discretionary bonuses, Fitch added up his fight purses, saying he was paid a total of $1,022,000 for 18 bouts with the promotion and “about $300,000 in bonuses,” which he said brought his total payout to $1,322,000. “Sounds like a lot of money,” he said. “But let’s look at that a little bit closer. Out of the 18 fights in that fight purse, I paid 20 percent of that to management and the gym. So if you take that number, divide it by seven-and-a-half years, I was making roughly $176,000 a year before management and gym fees.” The onetime welterweight title challenger, who in January signed with the upstart World Series of Fighting promotion after his high-profile UFC release, said he was in the “medium to high pay grade,” but added, “most fighters didn’t make as much money as I did.” Fitch’s take-home figure also leaves out taxes (UFC fighters are paid as independent contractors)
