In this week’s Trading Shots, MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes and former UFC/WEC fighter Danny Downes discuss what it takes to retire – and stay that way – after being sucked in by the vortex of professional cage fighting. Fowlkes: Danny, is it me or does it seem like retiring from MMA is the hot thing to do right now? Just recently you’ve got guys like Quinn Mulhern and Din Thomas hanging ‘em up, women’s MMA veteran Julie Kedzie calling it quits, and then you’ve got Georges St-Pierre ”stepping away.” Meanwhile, Anderson Silva , who many of us thought might retire after snapping his leg in half, was reportedly asking his surgeons when he can start training again (boy, they must have some good drugs at that hospital). You have some personal experience with retiring from this sport. Do you think fans and media really understand what goes into that decision?

Quinn Mulhern announces retirement following UFC Fight Night 34 loss

UFC fighter, Strikeforce vet and former King of the Cage champion Quinn Mulhern has announced his retirement. The 29-year-old, who fought 22 times since his pro debut in 2007, made the announcement following Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 34 loss to Katsunori Kikuno in Singapore. Mulhern, who dropped from welterweight to lightweight for the bout, suffered the decision loss (via 30-27 scores) on the event’s preliminary card. Mulhern went 3-1 in Strikeforce, which included a split-decision victory over Yuri Villefort, before signing with the UFC in early 2013. However, he suffered a TKO loss to Rick Story in his promotional debut and then the decision defeat to Kikuno on Saturday. According to Mulhern (18-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC), a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who unified KOTC’s world and Canadian welterweight titles in 2010, his camp went well for his latest fight, but he realized he just “won’t be competitive at this level.” His announcement (via Facebook ): Hey guys

UFC Fight Night 34 results: Katsunori Kikuno rolls past guard-happy Quinn Mulhern

SINGAPORE – Despite a big height and reach advantage over Katsunori Kikuno , Quinn Mulhern wanted to – or thought he needed to – fight on the ground. It didn’t work for him. Mulhern repeatedly had his takedowns stuffed, or dropped into guard by choice, and Kikuno did enough work on top to take a unanimous decision win. The lightweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 34 event at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.

UFC Fight Night 34’s Quinn Mulhern had no problems missing the holidays

Most fighters competing over the holiday season complain about missing Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s. UFC lightweight Quinn Mulhern is quite the opposite. Mulhern (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who meets Katsunori Kikuno (21-5-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 34 this Saturday in Singapore, actually was relieved to not deal with the expectations and pressures that come to the surface this time of year. He was just happy to focus 100 percent on his preparation. “The holidays kind of bum me out a bit, but this one I got to just be super focused,” Mulhern told MMAjunkie Radio. “I got to diet, focus, and it felt good to be in that zone in this time of year when you’re usually not.” The 29-year-old is hardly a Grinch-like figure when it comes to the holidays.
