At one point or another in every fighter’s career, they are paired up against a lesser known opponent where they have much more to lose than to gain. In the case of UFC bantamweight contender Urijah Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC), that’s the exact situation he finds himself in against unheralded Brazilian Yuri Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 26, which goes down Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. Currently ranked among the top 135-pound fighters in the world, Faber is on the cusp of a title shot after back-to-back submissions of Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen in February and April of this year. With an impressive resume under his belt, one would think “The California Kid” had intentions of facing the highest profile opponents possible in order to move up the ladder. Instead, Faber took a fight against someone looking to take what he’s got and doesn’t offer much in return. The last fight on Ben Askren ‘s Bellator MMA deal is in the books, and the promotion’s welterweight champion delivered yet again with perhaps his most dominant performance to date. Now CEO Bjorn Rebney finds himself in a position he’s been in before – hoping to keep one of his champions rather than lose him to the competition. Rebney on Wednesday confirmed to MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that Askren’s win over Andrey Koreshkov at this past week’s Bellator 97 card was the last fight on his current deal. Rebney also said he’s unsure of what steps the promotion will take in negotiations with Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA), who has a standard exclusive negotiating period with Bellator built into his deal before he can seek offers from other promotions. In the past, as was the case with former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez , Rebney waived the exclusive period and let Alvarez test the market early. He got an offer from the UFC, Bellator attempted to match it and now the entire case is tied up in the legal system with Alvarez’s side saying Bellator’s counter-offer was not a true match

WSOF 4′s Brandon Hempleman believes Marlon Moraes will underestimate his standup

While Marlon Moraes is a significant favorite over Brandon Hempleman at this Saturday’s World Series of Fighting 4 event, there’s one thing neither Moraes nor oddsmakers can prepare for: “Hot Rod’s” element of surprise. Entering his promotional debut against one of the most highly touted bantamweight prospects in the game today, few are giving Hempleman a chance of getting his hand raised against an opponent riding an impressive four-fight win streak.   As for Hempleman (9-1), he views his under-the-radar profile as an advantage and believes his lack of notoriety will be advantageous against Moraes (10-4-1) come fight night, particularly in the striking department.   “I think he’s going to underestimate (my striking), so he better be ready for it,” Hempleman told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “There’s not a lot of video on me.”  Having fought his first 10 professional bouts in regional promotions throughout the United States and Europe, Hempleman has quietly worked his way up to the opportunity he will get Saturday at Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.   Moraes is a fighter who has received a lot of attention since defeating Miguel Torres and Tyson Nam in his first two WSOF appearances, and Hempleman has been keeping a close eye on his opponent’s body of work.   “I think (his standup) is good,” Hempleman said.

Curran (34-15) fights Pedro Munhoz (8-0) for the Resurrection Fighting Alliance bantamweight title next week at RFA 9. And though he reserves the right to take another shot at flyweight down the road, a little more motivation might come from not having to cut that extra 10 pounds this time. “RFA 9: Curran vs. Munhoz” takes place Aug. 16 at StubHub Center in Los Angeles. After his bout against UFC interim champ Renan Barao at UFC on FUEL TV 7, he had a long list. “This one, I changed my diet, I changed the way I take care of my body, (and) I changed my strategy,” McDonald (15-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who next fights Brad Pickett (23-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 26, told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). UFC 163′s Bristol Marunde: Full training camp is a luxury I can only now afford

There are certain risks involved with taking a fight on short notice, and UFC middleweight Bristol Marunde knows them as well as anyone. Over the past two years, Marunde has had the opportunity to compete under the bright lights of the Strikeforce and UFC banners. However, in his two fights with the organizations, he had a minimal amount of time to prepare due to the fact he stepped in on very short notice. At this point in his career, Anthony Perosh is a man who seems to know pretty much what he wants. That includes who and where he’d like to fight – and that he’ll hang up his gloves when he’s good and ready, and that time sure isn’t coming soon. Perosh (13-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) on Saturday meets Vinny Magalhaes (10-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC) on the main card of UFC 163, which takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro in Magalhaes’ home country of Brazil. They’ll fight prior to the pay-per-view portion of the show after on FX. Although non-Brazilian UFC fighters have what amounts to a horrible record when fighting Brazilians in Brazil, it was Perosh who wanted to sign on the dotted line to go into enemy territory. “I’ve been to Brazil many times to compete in (Brazilian jiu-jitsu), but never in MMA,” Perosh told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio)
