It was a bad night for some familiar names at this past weekend’s KSW 36 event. The popular Polish promotion held Saturday’s card at CRS Hall in Zielona Gora, and in the headliner, UFC vet and former WSOF champ Rousimar Palhares suffered a decisive knockout loss. Facing Polish middleweight standout Michal Materla (24-5), Palhares (18-8), who’s been fighting overseas since both the UFC and WSOF released him following controversial submission finishes, ate a stiff second-round uppercut. After Palhares tapped out Jake Shields and held the submission even after the referee’s intervention, WSOF officials stripped him of the belt and indefinitely suspended him from the promotion.

Italy’s Venator FC books Sokoudjou vs. Matt Hamill, Che Mills vs. Roberto Rigamonti

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou The upstart Italian MMA promotion Venator FC continued to bolster its roster today with the signing of veteran fighters Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Che Mills . Sokoudjou (16-14), a veteran of the UFC, Bellator, WEC, PRIDE, Strikeforce, DREAM and even Affliction, will meet UFC and “TUF” veteran Matt Hamill (12-6) in a light heavyweight bout at Venator FC 3 this spring. And UFC veteran Mills (16-8) will take on Roberto Rigamonti (4-2-1) in a welterweight bout. Velator FC 3 takes place May 21 at Palasesto Arena in Milan, Italy.

Sokoudjou, Tom DeBlass among recent Bellator long-term roster additions

Bellator MMA continues to bolster its roster, which now has in excess of 180 fighters, and this past week it added several more key names to the promotion’s lineup. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (14-12 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), Tom DeBlass (9-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA), Malik Merad (19-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), Dmitriy Sosnovskiy (8-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) and Steve Garcia (3-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) have signed deals with the company, Bellator announced. Sokoudjou will make his promotional debut next month at Bellator 121, the first event of its 2014 “Summer Series,” against Terry Davinney (10-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). A select few fighters in MMA history can claim one-name recognition, but Sokoudjou is one of those fighters. “The African Assassin” has fought all over the world, and has fought for the UFC, WEC, PRIDE, Strikeforce and Affliction, among many others.
