Today, everyone knows Dvalisvhili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) as a non-stop force in the UFC’s octagon, who outworks and borderline toys with elite fighters on the biggest stages. But before coach Ray Longo got a hold of the Georgian to help guide his career to a UFC championship, Dvalishvili was a Golden Gloves boxer in the early 2010s.

Ray Longo thinks Merab Dvalishvili ’s long road to UFC gold turned him into an unstoppable force. Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) had to win 10-straight fights – including wins over former champions Jose Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo before earning his title shot. He dethroned Sean O’Malley to become UFC bantamweight champion this past September, but didn’t get too much time to enjoy his accomplishment. Instead, Dvalishvili felt pressured to make a relatively quick turnaround to defend his belt against undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov four months later at UFC 311. But the Georgian prevailed once again when he outlasted Nurmagomedov (18-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) by unanimous decision this past Saturday at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. “First off, he’s still getting better,” Longo told MMA on SiriusXM

Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) challenges bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) in the UFC 306 (pay-per-view, ESPNews, ESPN+) main event at Sphere in Las Vegas. Just weeks prior to his fight with O’Malley, Dvalishvili suffered a face laceration, which he posted on social media, prompting White to call him “next-level stupid.” Not only did he reveal that he had cut himself, but he proceeded to remove the stitches himself with bush shears

Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) took a lot of heat for making a distasteful comment about welterweight champion Leon Edwards’ murdered father during the UFC 296 pre-event news conference. An emotional Edwards (22-3 MMA, 14-2 UFC) admitted it took a lot of restraint not to unload on Covington in the moment, and he managed to put on a composed performance to shut him down in this past Saturday’s main event at T-Mobile Arena. Longo wasn’t having any of Covington’s attempts to sell the fight and thinks he majorly crossed the line. “I’ve got absolutely no use for the guy at all. Longo lives in Nassau County and trains many high-level UFC fighters in the area, including former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, who’s scheduled to headline UFC Oklahoma City on May 2. With social distancing guidelines in place and the closing of non-essential businesses in the state, which includes gyms, Longo is having tough time preparing Weidman for his drop back to 185 pounds to face Jack Hermansson. “He’s trying, yeah, definitely, but he’s got to do it at his house,” Longo told MMA Junkie

Chris Weidman Coach Believes Anderson Silva is Going to Have a “Bad Night” in Rematch

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman ended Anderson Silva’s seven-year reign atop the middleweight division at UFC 162 on July 6 by knockout. The two are set to rematch on Dec. 28 at UFC 168, and Weidman’s coach, Ray Longo, thinks it’s going to be another bad night for Silva. “This guy had a highlight reel that would scare the crap out of anybody. Now, knowing that he can knock this guy out – you’ve seen it in boxing a hundred times, guys don’t come back from that type of knockout. On top of that, the guy is 40 or 39 or whatever he is. Chris Weidman’s Knockout of Anderson Silva Wasn’t an Upset to Coach Ray Longo

It’s been well documented that many professional fighters were picking Chris Weidman to upset Anderson Silva at UFC 162 on July 6. When Weidman did just that, it sent shockwaves throughout the mixed martial arts industry, but not all were that stunned with the outcome. Weidman’s coach, Ray Longo, didn’t see Weidman’s knockout of Silva as an upset at all. “With Weidman, anybody that’s been in the gym with him, or who has sparred with him or rolled with him, I don’t think one guy thought that was an upset,” Longo told MMAWeekly.com content partner Shameless Radio . “This kid is for real. I think that’s why the pros were picking him. I think that grapevine was all over the place. The pros have a nice grapevine. I think GSP trained with him a little bit. He was at least in the room with him. Once one guy says one thing, it’s that whole telephone line; it starts going down the line. Anybody that’s trained or been in the room with him, this kid is a beast,” added Longo. Weidman’s confidence leading up to the fight was that of a veteran and less like a fighter with nine professional fights taking on the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts history. “Weidman was a four-time All-American. I think he went out for the Olympics. You don’t get to that level without being mentally strong,” Longo pointed out. Experience wasn’t the only thing Weidman had to overcome to defeat Silva. Weidman had been out of action for a year prior to the Silva fight. He underwent shoulder surgery and lost his home in Hurricane Sandy and was in financial ruin.
