CHICAGO – PFL president Ray Sefo isn’t sure where the communication breakdown occurred with Gegard Mousasi but assures that the promotion wants to have him compete soon. Mousasi (49-9-2), hasn’t competed since last May in a unanimous decision loss to Fabian Edwards at Bellator 296. The former Bellator and Strikeforce champion recently told MMA Junkie that he is frustrated with his current situation after PFL acquired Bellator, since he has yet to compete and does not have a fight scheduled.

LAS VEGAS – Ray Sefo was impressed with how Francis Ngannou handled himself in his boxing debut against Tyson Fury, but the former UFC heavyweight champion’s near victory in the ring could lead to changes in plans for his PFL debut. Prior to facing Fury, Ngannou was expected to make his PFL debut in Q1 of 2024. However, Ngannou’s success in the ring has given PFL president Sefo and other execs in the promotion pause about Ngannou’s return to MMA, considering the rise in talks of a potential rematch with Fury, or other matchups against top heavyweight boxers like Deontay Wilder or Anthony Joshua. “That’s something we got to talk to the team more about,” Sefo told reporters during a media scrum at Xtreme Couture.” I know, and obviously with Francis as well, I know he’s going to want to take a little bit of time off

In the wake of numerous positive athlete drug tests, PFL has officially partnered with USADA, the same anti-doping organization utilized by the UFC. In a memo sent Tuesday by PFL president of fighter operations Ray Sefo to fighters and teams, the promotion announced its immediate installment of the partnership and detailed what that exactly means. Fighters who are partaking in the upcoming playoffs are now required to partake in educational introduction sessions later this week. According to a document attached to the email, the PFL and UFC drug-testing protocols implemented by USADA “will be very similar, with minor distinctions to account for the PFL’s sport season format.” It is unclear exactly what those distinctions are at this time.

LAS VEGAS – PFL president Ray Sefo is still pursuing of one of the biggest free agents in the market. Former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou parted ways with the UFC in 2022, but is yet to find a new home. Among the offers he’s received is from the PFL, who appear willing to work around Ngannou’s demands. The avenue Ngannou is laser focused on is boxing, something he couldn’t come to terms with the UFC on.

Ray Sefo: ‘Everybody was happy’ with PFL’s pay-per-view debut

LAS VEGAS – PFL president Ray Sefo considers the promotion’s pay-per-view debut a success. The 2022 PFL Championships, which took place at Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, featured a six-fight main card that streamed on on ESPN+ pay-per-view last month. Viewers were charged $49.99, and although the number of buys wasn’t revealed, Sefo was happy with the overall result. “Everybody was happy with it,” Sefo told MMA Junkie on the World MMA Awards red carpet. “You’ve got to start somewhere, and we were happy with the outcome of the whole show. ESPN was truly happy with the show, so if they’re happy, we’re happy.” In the night’s headliner, Larissa Pacheco pulled off a massive upset when she defeated two-time champion Kayla Harrison to capture the women’s lightweight title.

ARLINGTON, Texas – There were high expectations in 2021 when the PFL brought in two high-profile free agents. Former Bellator welterweight champion Rory MacDonald and ex-UFC and WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis joined the promotion and were instantly frontrunners to win their seasons – and the $1 million prize that comes with each division’s title. But it was far from smooth sailing for the two. Pettis lost both his fights in the regular season and missed the four-man playoffs.

Despite some of the promotion’s biggest stars losing their opening bouts in the 2021 PFL season, Ray Sefo is unconcerned. In fact, the PFL president thinks it’s a good thing that some of the heavy betting favorites have faltered, as it has resulted in some thoroughly entertaining moments. In the first three weeks of the 2021 PFL season, we’ve seen the likes of former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, two-time PFL champions Natan Schulte and Lance Palmer, and former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum all fall short in their respective bouts.
