Through the Past Darkly: Reflections on UFC 163

I’m sitting here at my desk on Monday morning with two tabs open on my Internet browser. One shows the fight card for the UFC on FOX 8 event, which was free on network TV here in the States. The other shows the card for UFC 163 this past Saturday night, which was available in standard definition for $45, and HD for $55. The reason I’ve been staring at these two tabs for the past 10 minutes is because I’m trying to figure out the difference in quality that accounts for the radical difference in price. I’m trying, and honestly, I’m not coming up with much. That’s not just the hindsight talking, either. Say you don’t know anything about how either of those events turned out. Say you’re just looking at them on paper, trying to decide which fights are worth watching and which might even be worth paying for.

Start with Demetrious Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC). The UFC flyweight champ defended his title, as well as the honor of the 125-pounders, with a dominant, technically unimpeachable win over challenger John Moraga (13-2, 2-1) on Saturday. Anderson Silva came trotting into the media room to join the post-UFC 162 press conference at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Arena on Saturday night looking almost exactly the same as he had on all those other nights when he emerged as the winner rather than the loser. He wore a dark suit, a yellow Nike cap and a pair of sneakers. His face seemed relatively untouched, as usual, and his expression was still like that of a man who was sure there was something to smile about and was just waiting to find out what it was. That’s the Silva we know. The only thing different was that, this time, when he took his seat at the dais, the UFC middleweight belt wasn’t in front of him. Instead it was on the other side of the podium, getting acquainted with its new owner

Seems as though whatever brand of magic it is that flows through Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira ‘s veins when he fights in Brazil doesn’t work on fellow Brazilians. Or, since our sample size is still too small to draw any firm conclusions, maybe it just doesn’t work on Fabricio Werdum . If you’re one of those people who can barely be troubled to watch “The Ultimate Fighter” when it’s in English (*discreetly raises hand*), and so spent the better part of the past year wondering if Werdum had renounced professional violence and gone off to live in a monastery, consider Saturday night’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 main event your reminder. “Vai Cavalo” is still here, and he’s still pretty damned good. The question is, how good? Because I’m not sure his win over Nogueira gave us much of an answer. That’s not a knock on “Big Nog.” He might sometimes walk like the Tin Man when he’s outside the cage, but once his foot hits that mat he’s still a dangerous fighter with plenty of tricks up his sleeve
