Alexandre Pantoja believed a win over Matt Manzanares would get him a call from the UFC. Now time will tell. Pantoja had some dicey moments in the first round, but in the second he went to work, eventually choking the champion unconscious at 2:38 of the second round to take RFA’s flyweight title. The 125-pound championship bout was the main event of RFA 18, which took place at Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

Pantoja (14-2) stepped in for Joby Sanchez when Sanchez jumped to the UFC. On Friday, Ulysses Gomez (9-4) will return to the cage for the first time since a February 2013 loss to Phil Harris led to his release from the UFC. The extended layoff wasn’t one of Gomez’s choosing, but he isn’t worried that it will affect him when he meets Abel Cullum (18-6) at RFA 18 at Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.

With Joby Sanchez headed to the UFC, Legacy FC flyweight champion Matt Manzanares has a new opponent for next month’s RFA 18 headliner. RFA officials today confirmed with MMAjunkie that Alexandre Pantoja (14-2) has stepped in for Sanchez and will meet Manzanares (7-2) in the champ’s first title defense. RFA 18 takes place Sept. 12 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico. The main card airs live on AXS TV

Joby Sanchez gets UFC call, replaces Tim Elliott at UFC Fight Night 49

Although RFA has recently sent many fighters to the UFC, Joby Sanchez only needed to be booked for a fight with the promotion to get his call up to MMA’s premier organization. Sanchez (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who was slated to fight Matt Manzanares for the RFA flyweight title at RFA 18 on Sept. 12, instead has replaced injured Tim Elliott (10-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and now fights fellow 125-pounder Wilson Reis (17-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 49.
