After RFA 31 title loss, Zoila Frausto hospitalized, warns of weight-cutting dangers

Filed under: AXS TV Fights , Featured Videos , News , Videos Former Bellator women’s strawweight champion Zoila Frausto said a botched weight cut tapped into her central nervous system and ravaged her body prior to and during a bid for the vacant RFA 115-pound title. “Take the lesson from me ladies & gentlemen, cutting more than 10 (percent) of your body weight for a fight, though it doesn’t seem like much at the time, you will ending up paying for it, if not during, then after the fight,” Frausto (12-5), who dropped a unanimous decision to now-champ Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger (6-1), wrote on Instagram . “Don’t tap into your central nervous system for a weight cut!!!” In the co-main event of this past Friday’s RFA 31 at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center in Nevada, Lybarger dominated Frausto, a former muay Thai and boxing titleholder, in a largely standup fight, pitching a shutout on the judges’ scorecards for the title win (watch the highlights above). Frausto, whose fight this past weekend was her first in MMA following a two-year layoff, is the latest pro MMA fighter to detail a botched weight cut. Earlier this month, ex-UFC welterweight champ Johny Hendricks was forced to withdraw from a UFC 192 co-headliner against Tyron Woodley when he was hospitalized due to a kidney stone while trying to make the 171-pound limit

Bristol Marunde unveils aftermath of broken jaw suffered in RFA 31 headliner

Filed under: AXS TV Fights , News As rough and tumble as the sport of MMA can be, fight fans probably never get comfortable looking at a broken jaw. Veteran Bristol Marunde (16-10) came up short in his bid for the RFA welterweight title this past Friday. In a grueling RFA 31 headliner at Downtown Las Vegas Events Center in Nevada, the AXS TV-televised title bout came to an end in the fourth round , when reigning champ Gilbert Smith (12-4) connected on a flush punch. With his jaw clearly rattled, Marunde, a former UFC fighter who entered the main event on a four-fight winning streak, stopped and waved off the bout. RFA 31 results: Gilbert Smith smashes Bristol Marunde’s jaw to retain welterweight crown

Gilbert Smith It wasn’t easy, but Gilbert Smith survived some scary moments to retain his RFA welterweight title with a fourth round injury stoppage of Bristol Marunde . Marunde (16-10) attempted to use his length early, standing at distance and throwing straight right hands and the occasional head kick, but Smith (12-4) repeatedly charged in and threw heavy punches that caused early swelling around Marunde’s left eye. The action in Round 1 remained standing for the entire frame with Smith getting the better of the exchanges with his speed and leaving Marunde’s corner with some work to do on his swollen and bleeding eye. The early action in Round 2 took place on the feet with both men having good moments in the striking game.
