It took Rhys McKee five tries over the course of nearly five years and two stints with the promotion, but he finally got his first octagon win Saturday at UFC on ESPN 65 . The welterweight from Northern Ireland put on a striking clinic against Daniel Frunza (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in their preliminary card bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Daniel Frunza booked for UFC debut vs. Rhys McKee

After an impressive showing on Dana White’s Contender Series, Daniel Frunza has the opportunity to continue his momentum in the UFC. At a UFC Fight Night event April 5 expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Frunza (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will battle former Cage Warriors champion Rhys McKee (13-6-1 MMA, 0-4 UFC). Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Eurosport NL first reported the welterweight fight Sunday. Frunza entered his DWCS opportunity in September an underdog but wore down and then thrashed opponent Vadim Kutsyi en route to a second-round TKO stoppage. The win was his fifth in a row.

Cage Warriors has crowned a new welterweight champion. Saturday’s main event of Cage Warriors 140 at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland would see Rhys McKee challenge Justin Burlinson for the vacant welterweight title. The event was packed with exciting finishes from beginning to end, and it would be the UFC veteran McKee (12-4-1) who would close the show with one final knockout. Just a few seconds into the third round, moments after Burlinson (7-2) would attempt a spinning back elbow, McKee landed a crushing left hand that would leave his opponent slumped against the fence. The UFC has cut Antonio Carlos Junior and four others. On Thursday, multiple people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the roster moves but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. In late 2020, UFC president Dana White had estimated approximately 60 fighters would be cut in an effort to trim a bloated roster. “We’re going to go through some serious cuts here at the end of the year.

The UFC has cut Antonio Carlos Junior and two others. The “Ultimate Fighter: Brasil 3” winner known to many MMA fans as “Cara de Sapato,” or “Shoeface,” Junior (10-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) has been released from the promotion, his manager, Dominance MMA head Ali Abdelaziz, told MMA Junkie’s John Morgan on Thursday. Junior’s departure comes less than two weeks after a unanimous decision loss to Brad Tavares at UFC 257. The defeat was Junior’s third in a row, joining back-to-back decision losses to Uriah Hall and Ian Heinisch.

Two welterweights looking to bounce back into the win column will go head to head in Las Vegas in November. Northern Ireland’s Rhys McKee and the United States’ Alex Morono are booked to face off in a 170-pound bout at UFC on ESPN+ 41, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 14 at the UFC Apex, Las Vegas. MMA Junkie confirmed the booking with multiple people with knowledge of the situation, who wished to remain anonymous because the UFC has yet to make an official announcement. Morono (17-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) was finished with strikes by Khaos Williams in the first round of his most recent outing at UFC 247 back in February
