Brazilian Fighter Leandro Souza Dies Prior to Shooto 43 Weigh-ins, Event Cancelled

The Shooto 43 event slated for Friday in Brasilia, Brazil, has been cancelled following the death of one of the fighters slated to participate. Shooto Brazil president and Nova Unaio head trainer Andre Pederneiras announced the cancellation a few hours after he revealed that Nova Unaio fighter Leandro “Feijao” Souza, 26, passed away prior to weigh-ins on Thursday. Pederneiras, as of yet, has not released details of Souza’s death, other than to say it took place in the Botafogo neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Botafogo chief of police, John Ismar, in a statement to Brazilian news organization UOL , said that Souza died of a stroke, but the cause of the stroke was still unconfirmed

UFC Champ Jose Aldo Went to Hospital on Tuesday, Diagnosed with Kidney Stones

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo emerged from Saturday’s UFC 163 headlining bout with his belt, but he was far from unscathed. Aldo defeated Chan Sung Jung by TKO stoppage in the fourth round at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, but he fractured his foot in the process. The fractured foot put Aldo on the sidelines with a 90-day medical suspension, but that wasn’t the only reason the champ needed medical attention following the fight. According to a report by UOL , Aldo went to a hospital in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday due to a kidney problem. Dr. Marcio Tannure, who heads the Medical Committee of the Brazilian Athletic Commission, told MMAFighting.com that Aldo was diagnosed with kidney stones. Aldo has already been released from the hospital, and is at home resting

UFC 163 Prelims TV Ratings Suffer From Lack of Promtion and Difficult Summer Season

UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie failed to drive much interest heading into Saturday’s pay-per-view event, which emanated from Rio de Janeiro, and that was reflected in the TV ratings for the preliminary bout broadcast on FX. The UFC 163 Prelims on FX attracted an audience of 1,000,000 viewers for the four-bout, two-hour broadcast. UFC 163 admittedly suffered from a lack of promotional attention overall with the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports network, Fox Sports 1, and the re-branding of Fuel TV to Fox Sports 2, receiving the lion’s share of the media giant’s focus.

UFC 163 medical suspensions: Headliners Aldo, Jung get lengthy terms

As pictures indicated, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered a serious foot injury that could keep him out of action for three months. The UFC 163 medical suspensions, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and today received, indicate Aldo has been given a 90-day term, including 60 days with no contact for a fracture of his right foot. Chan Sung Jung , who challenged Aldo at this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event, could be out even longer. He was suspended 180 days or until cleared by a doctor for a shoulder dislocation that helped bring a halt to the title fight in the fourth round when Aldo took advantage after seeing the injury and earned a TKO stoppage. UFC 163 took place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Its main card aired live on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook

Brazil’s most famous fighter eventually has to retire, and when he does it could be Aldo (23-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) who fills his shoes. Regardless of whether Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) regains his UFC middleweight title when he has a rematch with new champ Chris Weidman at the end of the year, Brazil’s king of MMA superstardom is closing in on 40. Aldo is 26, and in excellent position to assume the throne once Silva’s fighting days are done. That’s the hope, anyway, both for Aldo and for the UFC. After another successful title defense at UFC 163 in Rio de Janeiro, however, it’s tough to tell whether Aldo can inspire the same fierce passion in one of the UFC’s key markets. In 2011, when Silva led the charge for the UFC’s first Brazilian event in more than a decade, tickets sold out in less than two hours.
