Wednesday’s Bellator 97 event included five main-card bouts and five knockouts, including TKO wins by welterweight champion Ben Askren and notable Muhammed Lawal . Check out the video highlights of each bout. Bellator 97 aired on Spike TV from Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. In addition to lightweight champ Michael Chandler (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) topping David Rickels (14-2 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) in just 44 seconds, fellow champ Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) posted a hugely lopsided TKO win over fellow welterweight Andrey Koreshkov (13-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) in the co-headliner. Two “Summer Series” tournaments also concluded as “King Mo” Lawal (11-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) battered and bloodied fellow light heavyweight Jacob Noe (12-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA), and heavyweight Vitaly Minakov (12-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) overcame a baffling point deduction to stop Ryan Martinez (10-2 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) late in their fight. The night kicked off with a vintage “Pitbull” performance as Patricio Freire (18-2 MMA, 6-2 BMMA) continually knocked down and ultimately stopped a resilient Jared Downing (9-3 MMA, 0-1 BMMA). Rodrigo Lima is a finisher. But so far, the Brazilian hasn’t been able to prove that at the next level. Lima, in his two fights with Bellator, has dropped a decision and won one. On Wednesday night against Rafael Silva , his plan is to change the course of things – at the most opportune time possible: Bellator’s next bantamweight tournament. But then again, if he has to go 15 minutes, so be it. Lima (11-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) and Silva (19-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) fight on the preliminary card of Bellator 97, which takes place at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., near Albuquerque. The main card airs on Spike TV, while the Lima-Silva bantamweight tourney semifinal fight streams on Spike.com. “Usually, my intent is to finish in first round,” Lima told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Despite the individual nature of fighting, MMA remains a team sport. Bellator 97′s Rafael Silva has seen both the positives and negatives of the fact. Silva (19-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) makes his Bellator debut tonight in a bantamweight-semifinal tournament fight against Rodrigo Lima (11-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA), which streams on Spike.com ahead of the Spike TV-televised main card at Santa Ana Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. It marks the U.S. debut of Silva, who carries an 11-fight win streak that the Brazilian built in his home country. And though the veteran 135-pounder makes a living fighting and teaching MMA, “Morcego” hopes this fight can secure some financial help from sponsors. That, he said, has been harder to do lately. Bellator "Summer Series" features two events instead of typical three

Instead of three events during its annual “Summer Series,” Bellator MMA this year will host just two. Sources close to the promotion confirmed that plan to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) not long after its first event of the summer, Bellator 96, which took place this past Wednesday at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. Bellator 97 takes place July 31 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., near Albuquerque, but there will not be an August event. Instead, the promotion simply will roll into the start of its ninth season, which opens Sept.
