Kunitskaya (10-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) came out on the wrong end of a first-round TKO to women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg (20-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in the pay-per-view main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Other main-card fighters who fell short included Frankie Edgar (22-6-1 MMA, 16-6-1 UFC), Andre Soukhamthath (12-6 MMA, 1-3 UFC), Stefan Struve (28-10 MMA, 12-8 UFC) and Cat Zingano (9-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC). Watching Rani Yahya put on yet another grappling clinic this past Saturday, you probably couldn’t tell just the type of sacrifice that had gone into making it up to the octagon in the first place. But then, shortly after a third-round armbar submission win over Russell Doane (15-8 MMA, 3-5 UFC), Yahya’s (25-9 MMA, 10-3 UFC) short-but-sweet speech told a tragic story. “Mom, wherever you are, I love you,” Yahya said in Portuguese. “You were the best mom in the world. Thank you for everything.” There’s isn’t really ever a good time for these things. But, in Yahya’s case, it was particularly unfortunate: His mom died a mere 11 days before UFC on FOX 28.

Rani Yahya fought with a heavy heart at UFC on FOX 28, taking the cage just 10 days after the death of his mother. After submitting Russell Doane with a third-round arm-triangle choke , Yahya delivered a touching tribute to his mother in his post-fight interview at Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. “Mom, wherever you are, I love you,” Yayha said in Portuguese at the start of his interview. “You were the best mom in the world. Thank you for everything.” Yayha (25-9 MMA, 10-3 UFC) would go on to dedicate the fight to his mother, who he said was “the biggest fan I had.” Via Twitter : This win was for mom Congrats, @RaniYahyaMMA #UFCOrlando pic.twitter.com/vHlPFSadUJ — UFC (@ufc) February 24, 2018 According to Yahya, he was completing his training camp for this fight at American Top Team in South Florida when he received news of his mother’s death. He had to travel back to Brazil to “say goodbye to her, to bury her,” and then return for the bout with Doane (25-9 MMA, 10-3 UFC).

ORLANDO, Fla. – It took a little work and persistence, but Rani Yahya finally finished Russell Doane on Saturday night for one of the most emotional wins of his career. Yahya (25-9 MMA, 10-3 UFC) choked out Doane (15-8 MMA, 3-5 UFC) with a third-round arm-triangle just 10 days after the death of his mother. Yahya got the finish at the 2:32 mark of the final frame.

Russell Doane ’s aggressiveness initially looked like it might work against him, but the relentless pressure ultimately led to a first-round win over Kwan Ho Kwak . Doane (15-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) used a quick outburst of offense to force a TKO win over Ho Kwak (9-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at the 4:09 mark of the opening round. The bantamweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 111 event at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass. Doane was the aggressor early in the fight, but that aggression didn’t initially lead to much against a patient Kwak, who slowed him with powerful low kicks and counter-punches. However, the Hawaiian found his opening after landing a knee from the clinch and following it up with punches, kicks and some fight-ending ground and pound.

The card for the UFC’s return to Singapore after a three and a half year absence is starting to take shape, including the addition of a former heavyweight champion. While the main and co-main events for UFC Fight Night 111 have not yet been announced, the promotion today did unveil five bookings for the card, which takes place June 17 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
