Injured Ryan Ford says he’s out of June’s WSOF 21 headliner

Ryan Ford June’s WSOF 21 event appears it’s lost one half of its planned headliner. Canadian vet Ryan Ford (22-5), who was slated to fight former UFC title challenger Yushin Okami (30-9) in the welterweight headliner, today announced a training injury has forced him out of the June 5 event. His announcement (via Instagram ): WSOF 21 takes place at Edmonton Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and the main card airs on NBCSN. WSOF officials haven’t formally announced Ford’s withdrawal or a potential replacement. Ford had hoped to rebound from a recent loss after Jake Shields submitted him at WSOF 14

Yushin Okami vs. Ryan Ford to headline WSOF 21

Yushin Okami WSOF President Ray Sefo made the announcement on the WSOF 18 preliminary stream that the promotion has set a fight for the main event of WSOF 21. The show will feature former UFC title challenger Yushin Okami taking on Ryan Ford in a middleweight bout. Okami (30-9 MMA, 1-1 WSOF) lost his most recent fight, being stopped by strikes by David Branch for the WSOF middleweight championship at WSOF 15. The loss was Okami’s fourth in his last eight fights, and all four came as a result of TKO to strikes. A win against Ford would keep him in the WSOF title picture while a loss would be devastating for his career. Ford (22-5 MMA, 1-1 WSOF) also lost his last time out, submitting to a Jake Shields rear-naked choke in the first round at WSOF 14

WSOF’s Ryan Ford suspended six months for failing to disclose broken arm

The Edmonton Combative Sports Commission has suspended WSOF welterweight Ryan Ford for failing to disclose a broken arm he suffered prior to a losing effort against Jake Shields in WSOF 14’s main event. ECSC Executive Director Pat Reid confirmed to MMAjunkie in an email that Ford is suspended six months and has 14 days to appeal the decision. In a text message to MMAjunkie, Ford said his suspension is retroactive to the Oct. 11 event date and added that he will not contest his punishment. “What’s fair or not fair doesn’t really matter,” he wrote.

WSOF 14 weigh-in results: Headliners, title challengers set

WSOF 14 headliners Ryan Ford (170.4) and Jake Shields (170.7) are each made weight and are now official for Saturday’s NBCSN-televised event, which takes place at Edmonton EXPO Centre at Northlands in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The pair each made weight at Friday’s official weigh-in ceremony, which took place at Edmonton’s Sutton Place Hotel. Additionally the night’s co-main event sees Derrick Mehmen meet Smealinho Rama meet for WSOF’s inaugural heavyweight title. Mehmen tipped the scales at 243 pounds, while Rama registered 235.2 pounds. WSOF 14’s four-fight main card airs live on NBC Sports Network (9 p.m. ET)
