Julian Marquez is back. Marquez (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will face Saparbeg Safarov at the UFC’s Aug. 29 event in Las Vegas. Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the booking Monday, but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. A graduate of “Dana White’s Contender Series,” Marquez returns to the octagon after enduring a two-year injury layoff. After picking up a second-round submission win over Darren Stewart on his UFC debut, Marquez suffered a fully torn latissimus dorsi during his split-decision loss to Alessio Di Chirico at the TUF 27 Finale in July, 2018.

Safarov (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) took a unanimous decision from Nicolae Negumereanu (9-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC on ESPN+ 5, which took place at The O2 in London. The card streamed on ESPN+. Safarov had several instances of cage grabbing, and even UFC analyst Paul Felder, currently a lightweight fighter on the roster, said on the broadcast he thought Safarov was flat-out a “dirty” fighter. Safarov had a point taken away in the fight and also landed a big elbow when referee Leon Roberts stopped the action

Nicolae Negumereanu replaces Gokhan Saki, meets Saparbeg Safarov at UFC London

Romanian light heavyweight Nicolae Negumereanu will make his UFC debut later this month. Negumereanu’s reps at Moments Sports Management recently announced their client has stepped in to replace an injured Gokhan Saki at UFC on ESPN+ 5, which takes place March 16 and streams live on ESPN+ from The O2 in London. MMAjunkie subsequently confirmed the booking with UFC officials. Negumereanu (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meets Saparbeg Safarov (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) on the night’s preliminary card.

Safarov (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) today posted on Instagram that his opponent at UFC on ESPN+ 5, Gokhan Saki (1-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC), is out of their light heavyweight fight. Safarov said he’s hoping to stay on the card against a new opponent. UFC officials have not yet made a formal announcement of Saki’s withdrawal from the fight
