It was a long and winding road for Sarah Kaufman , with many stops along the way, but she’s finally reached the end of her journey. Kaufman, a pioneer of Canadian women’s mixed martial arts, called it a career Thursday when she officially announced her retirement on social media. She was the inaugural Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion, a former UFC fighter, a PFL playoff qualifier, and an Invicta FC champ. At 36, Kaufman (22-5) walks away from the sport having won five of her most recent six fights. Her resume includes wins over Alexis Davis, Miesha Tate, Roxanne Modafferi, Liz Carmouche, Leslie Smith, Jessica-Rose Clark, and Pannie Kianzad, among others. In 27 professional fights, she only lost to Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko, Davis, Larissa Pacheco, and Marloes Coenen

The PFL made the decision to suspend the entire 2020 season due to growing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, but Kaufman (21-5 MMA, 1-1 PFL) understands what prompted the promotion’s decision. “It does make sense,” Kaufman told MMA Junkie.

Sarah Kaufman certainly has logged more cage time than any other female on the PFL roster, which is why selecting to walk over to the semifinals wasn’t too difficult of a choice. Kaufman was scheduled to face Roberta Samad in July before Samad missed weight, giving the already No. 1 seed Kaufman the choice to either fight or move on automatically to the playoffs. With a guaranteed paycheck, Kaufman didn’t see the point in taking potential unnecessary damage. The tournament format already set her next fight, and the goal is to make it to the finals to try and win $1 million. “For sure I would have loved to have fought a second time to have that continuous momentum pushing forward,” Kaufman told MMA Junkie.

Sarah Kaufman advanced to the 2019 PFL lightweight tournament semifinals, notching nine points in the regular season. But after picking up a first-round submission win in this year’s first PFL event, Kaufman didn’t have to fight a second time. Her scheduled opponent, Roberta Samad, failed to make weight at PFL 2019, Week 4, and Kaufman was awarded a walkover result into the playoffs. Kaufman was already the top seed at that time with six points and didn’t need to compete at the July 11 event in order to secure her position in the women’s lightweight semifinals

Sarah Kaufman has locked up a spot in the PFL 2019 playoffs – and she only had to fight once to get there. Kaufman (21-4), who was scheduled to fight on Thursday in her second regular season matchup, will not longer compete on the card after her opponent Roberta Samad (5-1) missed the women’s lightweight limit by 0.6 pounds ahead of the card at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. Kaufman will be paid her show and win money, MMA Junkie verified with a PFL official, and the former Strikeforce champion will receive three points in the women’s 155-pound standings.
