Former NFL’ers turned UFC employees Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub met in the cage at UFC 165 Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Unlike their previous occupations, this one allows powerful blows to the head of their opponents. In fact, it’s encouraged. However, for the first 30 seconds of their showdown on Saturday, nobody told these two heavyweight sluggers, as there was not a single strike thrown. The former training partners and castmates on The Ultimate Fighter 10 met in the center of the Octagon without touching gloves. The pre-fight trash talk was hot and heavy between the former friends, and after the first 30 seconds had ticked away, the two big men started exchanging with reckless abandon.

UFC on FOX 8 main-eventer and flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson holds the dubious honor of being the only current champ to never have headlined a pay-per-view event. But that could change soon, according to UFC President Dana White. “[Johnson] has been on a lot of big cards,” White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “He’s going to fight on FOX again, and we’re in the building phase of that division. So the answer is yes.” The 125-pound division made its debut in March 2012 with an unofficial four-man tournament to crown the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champ. Although delayed by a botched score early on in the competition, Johnson won the title this past September with a split call over Joseph Benavidez and in January defended the belt with a unanimous score over John Dodson

WINNIPEG – James Krause scored $100,000 while Shawn Jordan and Sam Stout each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 161 event. Jordan earned the “Knockout of the Night” award, Krause picked up the “Submission of the Night” bonus, and Krause and Stout each earned “Fight of the Night” honors. FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Thiago Silva said he had a score to settle with Rafael Cavalcante, and he certainly fought like it on Saturday night. In the final minute of a blistering first round, Silva backed Cavalcante up against the fence with a punch combo that put the former Strikeforce champ on the defensive, then dropped him to the mat with a right uppercut that spelled doomed for Cavalcante at 4:29 of the first round. The light heavyweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. It aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook. Both Cavalcante and Silva began the bout as if they expected it to end soon – and violently.
