Seth Petruzelli on retirement, recent callout, fighting Kimbo-Shamrock winner

Seth Petruzelli and Kimbo Slice Seth Petruzelli announced his MMA retirement in June 2013. So, he thought it was odd when a friend sent him a text message back in January letting him know that former opponent and recent Bellator MMA signee Kevin “ Kimbo Slice ” Ferguson had called him out. The retired fighter, who was relaxing in his Florida home when he received the eyebrow-raising text, told MMAjunkie that the call out from Slice left him a bit confused.

Seth Petruzelli retires from fighting at age 33 following his Bellator 96 knockout loss to “King” Mo Lawal on June 19. He follows Renato “Babalu” Sobral into retirement. Babalu retired in the cage following his Bellator 96 loss to Jacob Noe. Petruzelli (14-8) made the announcement via his Facebook page on Friday. “I want to thank my family, friends, fiancé and fans for being by my side these past 13 years plus of my MMA career. Every time I fought it was to please and excite you but most of all make you proud of me. Up until a couple years ago it pleased and excited me as well.

When Muhammed Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) was knocked out by Emanuel Newton earlier this year, some wondered if “King Mo” was already on the downslide in his career. A brutal Bellator 96 finish of Seth Petruzelli (12-2 MMA, 3-1 BFC) addressed those concerns, and now Lawal is promising something even more violent against Jacob Noe . “I don’t like him,” Lawal said at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 post-event press conference in Thackerville, Okla. “I don’t like the gym he trains at. He’s fake. He talks a lot of trash behind my back, and I hope that he’s here listening, or ya’ll can tell him this because I’m going to beat the brakes off of him. I’m going to whoop his ass so bad I’m going to retire him.” Fighting for the first time since his knockout loss to Newton, Lawal impressed in his first-round finish of Petruzelli. Comfortable on his feet but also quick to utilize his wrestling background, Lawal took the fight to the floor and then delivered a stunning, one-punch knockout via ground-and-pound.

A pair of Bellator MMA Summer Series tournament finals will take place at this summer’s Bellator 97 event, as Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) meets Jacob Noe (12-2 MMA, 3-1 BFC) and Vitaly Minakov (11-0 MMA, 2-0 BFC) faces Ryan Martinez (10-2 MMA, 3-1 BFC). MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed with Bellator officials that the four Bellator 96 victors will compete at the promotion’s next event, which takes place July 31 at Santa Ana Center in Albuquerque, N.M. Lawal and Noe meet in a light heavyweight tourney final, while Minakov and Martinez square off to conclude the heavyweight tourney. There was initially some concern that Noe may have broken his hand in a Bellator 96 win over Renato “Babalu” Sobral, but he was cleared by doctors after the event and will compete at Bellator 97. Bellator 97 is headlined by a pair of championship contests as lightweight kingpin Michael Chandler faces David Rickels and welterweight title holder Ben Askren meets Andrey Koreshkov . As with all of Bellator MMA’s Summer Series events, the night’s main card airs on Spike TV, while prelims stream on Spike.com. In headliner of the event, Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) scored a violent first-round knockout after blasting a downed Seth Petruzelli (14-8 MMA, 1-2 BFC) with a monstrous right hand. The one-hitter quitter moved Lawal to the finale of the four-man “Summer Series” light-heavyweight tournament, where he’ll meet fellow Bellator 96 winner Jacob Noe . With the win, Lawal successfully rebounded from a spinning-backfist knockout to Emanuel Newton earlier this year. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino at Thackerville, Okla.
