UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was able to do what no other 185-pound fighter could before him, hand former titleholder Anderson Silva his first UFC loss in seven years of competition when the two fought at UFC 162 on July 6. The 29-year-old New Yorker secured an early takedown in the title fight. He attempted two submissions and knocked out the greatest of all time with a left hook in the second frame. It was an amazing feat, but made more incredible by Weidman not being in top form for the fight. “I think I went out there and worked hard and went for everything that I felt. Ed Herman can share a hundred stories about his early MMA career. There was the time a delayed flight forced a mad scramble and a fight with Nick Thompson just a few hours after his plane touched down in Ohio. There were the countless roadside motels that, according to Herman, would make even the most hardscrabble traveler think, “Man, that place looks sketchy.” There was the meager $200 paycheck for his first MMA fight, though it nearly matched his weekly construction-job paycheck, so it seemed like a windfall at the time. And there’s the time his trainer’s flight got mixed up and forced him to rent a car and drive across Texas to make Herman’s fight just in time. Back then, in the early 2000s (and well before MMA’s current boom), that was the life of an up-and-coming fighter. But now, more than seven years into a UFC career that has seen plenty of highs and some hefty paychecks, Herman is thankful for his current veteran status.

Suffering through a five-fight losing streak, former WEC/UFC featherweight Leonard Garcia recognizes what he’s been doing wrong. “I had a couple fights where I had been doing the same thing I’d done before and wasn’t moving forward with things I should have,” he said. “I was relying too much on landing the big punch.” Not only does he feel like he was doing the wrong thing in fights, but also in training, thus Garcia has been working with a new team. “I’ve had the same training partners for the last seven years and it kind of felt like going through the motions every camp,” Garcia told MMAWeekly.com. “I got complacent. “I’m going to out to Alpha Male and training with some of those guys: Duane Ludwig, Urijah Faber, Lance Palmer and all those guys. It’s really changed my game all over again.

Not the other way around. But then, there was nothing normal about the main event of UFC 162 in Las Vegas, so why should the immediate aftermath be different? All it took was one left hook from challenger Chris Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) to put an end to Anderson Silva ‘s (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) clowning around in the cage, and with it his record-breaking reign as UFC middleweight champion. Since signing with the World Series of Fighting last year, welterweight Josh Burkman has worked his way into the position of being one of the promotion’s top 170-pound fighters with two wins in two fights for the company. As Burkman told MMAWeekly.com , getting to this point was his objective from the beginning. “My goal was to go in and win fights against top competitors and become a feature guy in the organization,” he said. “(President) Ray Sefo and (matchmaker) Ali (Abdel-Aziz) promised me they’d go out and get top talent and they’ve done that. “I’m real excited about the show, their deal with NBC Sports Network, and I think we’re headed in the right direction.” Burkman will get a chance to prove he’s tops in the promotion when he takes on fellow former UFC welterweight Jon Fitch on Friday in Las Vegas, live on NBC Sports Network. The bout is a rematch of their initial fight seven years ago. “The only thing that carries over is I remember getting beaten up by a very good fighter,” chuckled Burkman.
