Former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar had a short-lived tenure in mixed martial arts, but it was certainly impactful. He won the UFC championship in just his fourth professional MMA bout, defeating Randy Couture. Lesnar defended the belt twice, including this surprising stoppage victory over then-interim champion Shane Carwin at UFC 116. He would lose the belt to Cain Velasquez in his next bout. Carwin, 42, hasn’t fought since back-to-back losses to then-UFC champ Brock Lesnar (title loss) and Junior Dos Santos (in a title-eliminator) in 2011.

Two notable names are late additions to the upcoming continuation of the Rizin FF open-weight world grand prix. Bellator veteran Muhammed Lawal (20-5) has stepped in as a replacement for recently scratched Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1) and will fight Mirko Filipovic (32-11-2). Additionally, former UFC and PRIDE fighter Heath Herring (28-14), who hasn’t fought since 2008, has replaced Shane Carwin (12-2) and will fight Amir Aliakbari (3-0) in another quarterfinal-round matchup at the upcoming Rizin FF 3 event. Rizin FF officials confirmed the matchups today when contacted by MMAjunkie

The tournament matchups are set for Rizin FF’s Dec. 29 event, which continues the Japanese promotion’s world openweight grand prix, and some familiar names are featured in the quarterfinal round. The event, Rizin FF 3, takes place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Two days later, on New Year’s Eve, the semifinal round and tournament final take place at the same venue as part of Rizin FF 4. As previously announced, one Rizin FF 3 tournament matchup includes MMA legends and big-show vets Mirko Filipovic (32-11-2) vs. Wanderlei Silva (35-12). Additionally, former UFC interim champion Shane Carwin (12-2), who hasn’t fought since 2011, takes on follow striker Amir Aliakbari (3-0)

The former UFC interim heavyweight champion has signed a deal with Rizin FF. In his post, Carwin (12-2) made it clear the decision was not entirely motivated by money because the best financial offer was made by Bellator. Also, attempts to put together a fight with MMA great Fedor Emelianenko (36-4) in other promotions were unsuccessful.
