Invicta FC Will Soon Join Reality Television with Its Own Reality Series

It was a reality show in 2005 that catapulted the Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed martial arts into the mainstream with the debut of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV. Bellator MMA launched its reality series, Fight Master: Bellator MMA , in June. Invicta FC will join the promotions with reality shows in the near future. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp made the announcement following Invicta FC 6 on July 13. “We’re doing a reality series that will be completely different than the format of what the UFC is doing and what Bellator is doing,” said Knapp. “It will give an opportunity for these athletes to be more known and elevated in the eyes of the public and all that kind of thing.” Invicta FC, an all-female fight promotion, held its first event in April 2012 and has seen steady growth in its first year of existence. “I think it’s important for the athletes to know that we’re striving and moving forward every day, and I think that gives them even more to fight for and be excited about,” she said. “I mean, come on. Look at these girls. Can you imagine watching a show with all these personalities that we have here in Invicta? This show is going to be amazing.” The organization is currently working on a pilot for the reality series. Leslie Smith Expects Barb Honchak to “Bring It” in Invicta FC Flyweight Title Fight

Leslie Smith made her flyweight debut at Invicta FC 6, winning by unanimous decision against Jennifer Maia on July 13. Her next fight in the new weight class will be against champion Barb Honchak later this year. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp announced the match-up during the Invicta FC 6 post-fight press conference. Prior to making the drop down to the flyweight division, Smith lost an extremely close split decision to Sarah Kaufman , a fight Smith felt she won. “My sense of redemption will come when I beat Sarah Kaufman,” she said. But the title shot opportunity at flyweight will keep her in the 125-pound division. “That’s very good incentive to say in this weight class.” Smith (6-3-1) is anticipating a tough match-up with the titleholder, but doesn’t expect to see anything she hasn’t already faced. “Barb’s name is ‘Little Warrior,’ so I expect she’s going to bring it. I think that she’s solid in all areas, but Jennifer Maia was solid in all areas,” said Smith during the Invicta FC 6 post-fight press conference

Former Invicta FC atomweight champion Jessica Penne wants a rematch with Michelle Waterson , but Invicta FC has other plans. “I think I’m ready for a rematch,” said Penne following her Invicta FC 6 submission win over Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc on Saturday. Penne became the first ever champion in Invicta FC history when she defeated Naho Sugiyama at Invicta FC 3 in October 2012. Waterson defeated Penne in her first title defense by arm bar to capture the Invicta FC atomweight title at Invicta FC 5 on April 5. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp believes Penne is deserving of another title shot, but will not make the rematch out of respect for Waterson as a champion. “I always look at it this way. I feel like when someone becomes champion that respectfully you should give them a fight before they face that opponent again. That’s just my thoughts on it,” said Knapp during the Invicta FC 6 post-fight press conference.

Invicta FC 6 Results: Cris Cyborg Dominates Marloes Coenen, Captures Featherweight Championship

Company president Shannon Knapp couldn’t have picked a higher profile event to make the move to PPV, as a rematch three years in the making headlined the fight card. Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Marloes Coenen first met three-and-a-half years ago with Cyborg, then the Strikeforce 145-pound champion, winning by way of TKO stoppage in the third round. On Saturday night, they met with the inaugural Invicta FC featherweight championship on the line. The belt that was on the line was about the only difference from their first fight to this one. Much like their first fight, Cyborg was clearly still the much more aggressive, stronger, and more powerful fighter. Coenen opened strong, attacking with leg kicks and punch combinations, but it was evident from the first round that Cyborg was in full control of the fight

Talking to Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp about her organization’s first televised pay-per-view event this Saturday night, you get the sense that she can’t quite believe she’s doing this with her one-year-old company. “I’m so old school and the mindset is, you never go to pay-per-view until you’ve built that brand big and you can do those big numbers,” Knapp told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “It took me a little bit to change my mind.” More specifically, Knapp said, it took “a good deal,” one that wouldn’t cost significantly more than what she already was paying to put her all-female fight cards out via internet streams. “And also, you know what? This card deserves it,” said Knapp. “It gives more options to fans to view it, and I figured it’s worth the risk. No expectations, just want to go out and put on a good product like we always do.” That is how this grand experiment started, by relying on both the strength of the fights and the chance to watch them for free on the Internet, where MMA fandom lives. First, it was a free online stream through Invicta’s website, then an online pay-per-view through Ustream, and now a move to televised pay-per-view, at least in North America (Invicta FC 6 still will be available via Ustream elsewhere in the world).

Invicta Fighting Championships recently announced that its next event, Invicta FC 6: Coenen vs. Cyborg II , would be available live on pay-per-view in North America. Strawweight Champ Carla Esparza Out of Invicta 6 with Knee Injury

Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza has been forced out of her scheduled July 13 title defense against Ayaka Hamasaki due to a knee injury. MMAWeekly.com confirmed the news with Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp. It was first reported on Tuesday by MMAFighting.com . Esparza’s injury has caused a shake-up to the Invicta FC 6 fight card and could possibly lead to the crowning of an interim titleholder. Claudia Gadelha, who was originally scheduled to face Joanne Calderwood on the fight card, will now face Hamasaki. Invicta FC officials are waiting to learn how long Esparza’s injury will keep her sidelined before making a decision on whether Hamasaki vs. Gadelha will be for an interim title. The promotion is awaiting commission approval on a new opponent for Calderwood.
