There are certain risks involved with taking a fight on short notice, and UFC middleweight Bristol Marunde knows them as well as anyone. Over the past two years, Marunde has had the opportunity to compete under the bright lights of the Strikeforce and UFC banners. However, in his two fights with the organizations, he had a minimal amount of time to prepare due to the fact he stepped in on very short notice. UFC 163 Fighter Ian McCall: “I’ve Kind of Blown My UFC Career So Far”

When former Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion Ian McCall inked a deal with the UFC in late 2011, he had high expectations. He entered the 2012 UFC Flyweight Tournament to determine the inaugural UFC 125-pound champion. He faced Demetrious Johnson in the opening round and the two fought to a draw. Johnson was originally declared the winner, but after a scoring error correction, the fight was ruled a draw. Johnson defeated McCall by unanimous decision in a rematch. In his next outing, McCall faced Joseph Benavidez and lost via unanimous decision. He’s gone 0-2-1 in his three UFC fights, and was not in a good place mentally. His personal life was coming unraveled as well as his career. The 29-year-old fighter made changes in his life, eliminated some relationships, distanced himself from others, and is ready to move forward inside and outside of the cage. “I’m in a much better place. You know, I’ve kind of blown my UFC career so far, but now it’s time to earn what’s rightfully mine,” McCall told MMAWeekly.com content partner Knockout Radio . “I’ve always been physically ready. Every fight, I’ve always been in shape. I’ve always been there. Just for me it’s a mental thing because I can be a head case and that really has been what’s gotten me down in the past, but I took personal steps in my personal life, new relationships, new whatever it may be to just change for the better.

The UFC’s first visit to Brazil on the FOX Sports 1 network continues to take shape with the addition of two fights. Marcos Vinicius (20-4-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) meets UFC newcomer Ali Bagautinov (10-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at flyweight, while Godofredo Pepey (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) vs. Sam Sicilia (11-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at featherweight at UFC on FOX Sports 1 3. UFC officials today announced the new matchups confirming reports from Globo and Lancenet . UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 takes place Sept. 4 at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It will be the UFC’s second visit to the city after first visiting for UFC 147 in 2012.

Facing lengthy injury rehab, Marcus Brimage plans drop to 135 upon UFC return

When Marcus Brimage returns from an injury that will keep him down likely into 2014, he will do so in a new weight class. Brimage (6-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is rehabbing an Achilles tendon injury, but when he comes back, he is planning to drop from featherweight to bantamweight. Brimage’s manager, Lex McMahon, on Wednesday confirmed the plan to MMAjunkie.com after Brimage on Tuesday told Amy Barton of MMA DieHards’ Punch Drunk Radio of his decision to move down to 135 pounds. “Marcus has started his rehab and is working with a team of doctors, therapists, coaches and nutritionists to make certain that he returns to the octagon as soon as possible and in the best shape possible,” McMahon told MMAjunkie.com. “Current estimates are for a nine-month recovery. Upon his return, Marcus will fight as a bantamweight.” After appearing on Season 14 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Brimage started his official UFC career 3-0 at featherweight with decision wins over Stephen Bass , Maximo Blanco and Jimy Hettes .

You hear it all the time in MMA. Such-and-such team brought so-and-so in as a training partner or a coach, and now everything is better. Not that they ever admitted that anything was bad before. Not that anyone has ever had anything less than the best training camp ever, which whipped them into the best shape of their lives. It’s just that, thanks to this one person, night has become day. Everything is different now, and every change is for the better.

How much can one person change in a fight gym? Depends on the person – MMA Junkie
