Following a successful 2012 campaign that saw him go 3-0 (with one no contest), lightweight up-and-comer Justin Harrington picked up his fourth win in a row this past March against Garry Winslow at ROTR 27 in quick fashion. “It was kind of quick,” said Harrington of his 57-second submission victory over Winslow. “With him I wanted to show more of what I’m about and bring a little bit more of my standing game because in my past couple of fights I’ve gotten away from what’s gotten me a lot of my wins, but he made the mistake and I had to capitalize on it.” As one of the Northwest’s top prospects, Harrington has been given an opportunity to showcase his skills in a feature bout on Saturday’s CageSport 26 event at the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife, Wash., in a rematch against Levi Peaslee of their July bout from last year

Like many of the other RFA fighters who had a layoff before returning to action earlier this year, middleweight prospect Casey “Spider Monkey” Ryan came back to MMA with an impressive win. At the XFS this March, Ryan picked up a second-round TKO stoppage of veteran Matt Lagler, and in the process managed to showcase his ever-diversifying game. “There are things I could have definitely done better that we’ve been working on, but I got to show my striking, which I haven’t got to show off in other fights,” said Ryan.

And while countless athletes around the world are vying for one of the UFC’s limited roster spots, Rinaldi knows that fighting for RFA has him one step ahead of everyone else. Rinaldi (6-1) nearly had his path to the UFC set in 2012 when he selected for “The Ultimate Fighter 15,” where his was an elimination-round win away from earning a spot on the cast. Unfortunately, Joe Proctor quickly submitted him and, and Rinaldi never had the chance to truly showcase his talents.

UFC 163′s Bristol Marunde: Full training camp is a luxury I can only now afford

There are certain risks involved with taking a fight on short notice, and UFC middleweight Bristol Marunde knows them as well as anyone. Over the past two years, Marunde has had the opportunity to compete under the bright lights of the Strikeforce and UFC banners. However, in his two fights with the organizations, he had a minimal amount of time to prepare due to the fact he stepped in on very short notice. At UFC 163 tonight, though, Marunde feels he will finally get the chance to showcase his full skillset, backed by the preparation of a full training camp. “Training camp is one thing that has been a huge difference for this fight,” Marunde told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “My last two fights were called on a week’s notice, and it’s hard to prepare.” Most MMA fighters do their best to keep in shape year-round so that when they do get the call for a short notice fight, they are ready to make the very best of the opportunity

Season 9 Lightweight Tournament Launches at Bellator 101 in Portland

Portland’s Rose Garden Arena plays hosts to Bellator 101 on Friday, Sept. 27. The night will showcase the opening round of the Bellator Lightweight Tournament, as well as stacked preliminary card. Tickets for the event are on sale Friday at 10 a.m. and can be purchased by visiting the Rose Garden Arena Box Office. The event will broadcast LIVE starting at 6 p.m.

His UFC 162 opponent, Chris Weidman , doesn’t disagree, but that could make victory all the sweeter. “I have a lot to showcase, and I’m excited,” Weidman told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “Against Anderson Silva, I get to demonstrate what I’ve been doing in the gym and what I’ve been dying to show other people. It’s a huge platform for me to come out looking like ‘The Man.’” The Silva-Weidman title fight headlines the five-bout main card of UFC 162 on Saturday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET). Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) looks to accomplish what 14 UFC opponents have failed to do in 16 tries: enter the octagon and defeat Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC). Weidman, 29, who didn’t begin his pro career until Silva had already defended the UFC belt four times, isn’t trying to belittle the Brazilian’s accomplishments.

Could UFC, Daniel Cormier Help Save Olympic Wrestling with Crossover Matches?

There has been a rallying cry in the wrestling community ever since the Olympic committee decided to yank the sport from the Games starting in 2020. Since that time, wrestling has made it onto the short list to be re-added to the Olympics with a final vote coming later this year, but the supporters of the sport have learned a valuable lesson that anything less than growing is dying. In that vain, it appears the wrestling world is looking to take the next big step in promoting the sport on a national level. With the success of the jiu-jitsu promotion Metamoris putting on a major show just a few weeks ago that attracted a solid live audience, as well as buyers on pay-per-view, wrestling may be headed towards a similar format. On the heels of the recent U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma, efforts are being made along with USA wrestling to potentially build a promotable event similar to Metamoris featuring the best of the best in the wrestling world competing against one another. Sources have indicated that an event is potentially being planned for September with wrestlers from all walks of life being asked to participate in the event. In one of the biggest moves, however, rumors have it that the group organizing the effort is also targeting some of the biggest stars in the mixed martial arts world to participate in the event. Many of the top fighters in the UFC , Bellator and other promotions have come from wrestling backgrounds, so it makes perfect sense to showcase them on this type of event.
