(This story appeared in today’s edition of USA TODAY .) It’s no small thing to build a new weight class in the UFC. But if what’s going on in the 145-pound division these days proves anything, it is that patience pays off. UFC 162 on Saturday featured two fights in the featherweight class — one between ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (16-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC) and Charles Oliveira (16-4-1 MMA, UFC 4-4-1), and another between Cub Swanson (20-5 MMA, 5-1) against Germany’s Dennis Siver (21-9 MMA, 10-6 UFC). Both bouts won $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses. UFC 163 in August will be headlined by another featherweight bout, this one for the title, as champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defends his belt against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC). The debut event on Fox Sports 1 in Boston two weeks later is set for at least four featherweight bouts, including Ireland’s up-and-coming Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC). It all adds up to what could be a breakout summer for the division that, as recently as three years ago, was deemed not quite good enough for the likes of the UFC

LAS VEGAS – First up for UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is Chan Sung Jung , though Anthony Pettis and Ricardo Lamas , as well as UFC 162 winners Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson , are also queued up behind “The Korean Zombie.” And if you want the latter to get the next title shot, he’s imploring you to speak up. Swanson, a former WEC fighter whose career had been plagued with hand injuries, kicked off Saturday’s UFC 162 pay-per-view main card in impressive fashion. After surviving Dennis Siver ‘s early attacks, Swanson stormed back for a third-round TKO victory that earned him a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus. LAS VEGAS – Chris Weidman , Cub Swanson , Dennis Siver , Frankie Edgar and Charles Oliveira each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 162 event. Weidman earned the “Knockout of the Night” award, and a pair of “Fight of the Night” honors were handed out to Swanson-Siver and Edgar-Oliveira. Without any tapouts, there was no “Submission of the Night” bonus. UFC officials announced the bonuses following the card. UFC 162 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) scored perhaps the most stunning knockout in UFC history when he stopped longtime middleweight champion Anderson Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) in the second round – after Silva was toying with him and taunting him

Swanson (19-5) has put together a four-fight winning streak and is closing in on a title shot, but he won’t be calling anyone out following his UFC 162 bout. “I’ve been really thinking about that a lot in my room and I feel like, if I get the opportunity, I’m going to let the fans decide,” said Swanson during the UFC 162 open workouts on Wednesday. ”I feel like my work speaks for itself. Since dropping from the lightweight division to the 145-pound weight class, Dennis Siver has won back-to-back fights. LAS VEGAS – Add Dennis Siver to the growing list of UFC featherweights who believe they’re just one win away from a title shot. As it turns out, Siver’s Saturday opponent, Cub Swanson , is right there with him. Siver (21-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Swanson (19-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) meet in a key contenders bout to open up the main card of UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Siver has won two straight at featherweight since dropping down from lightweight, where he spent 13 fights after a drop from welterweight and picked up five post-fight bonus awards in the UFC. Swanson has four straight featherweight wins and along with Ricardo Lamas believes he should be next in line for a shot at the 145-pound belt that Jose Aldo puts on the line against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , in August. Lamas and Swanson believe they should be there ahead of Jung, as it is.

Kicking off Saturday’s UFC 162 pay-per-view main card is an intriguing bout between featherweight contenders Dennis Siver (21-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Cub Swanson (19-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC). While Swanson, who’s overcome injuries to post a four-fight winning streak, has garnered much of the attention ahead of the Las Vegas event, it’s probably a good time to remember some of Siver’s early work in the UFC. Although the German fighter hasn’t posted a knockout win in nearly four years, his current 10-2 run includes some memorable spinning stuff back in 2009. In one of the bouts, against Nate Mohr , Siver kicked off his second UFC stint in thrilling fashion. Check out the video above for the stoppage.
