SEATTLE – The way Melvin Guillard waited against the fence, coiled and ready to counter Mac Danzig’s attacks, you got the sense that someone would hit the mat sooner or later. Turned out it was Danzig who was destined to hit the deck, as a second-round left hook by Guillard dropped him and a few follow-up hammerfists knocked him the rest of the way out, resulting in a knockout victory for Guillard at 2:47 of Round 2. The lightweight bout was part of today's UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX. It seemed clear early on that Guillard had a speed advantage in the match-up. Danzig made a couple early attempts to get the action to the mat, but when that proved unsuccessful the former “Ultimate Fighter” winner had to settle for striking with Guillard, which proved as dangerous as ever. The left by Guillard sent Danzing tumbling backward.

Former UFC champion Frankie Edgar will do something he hasn’t done in years when he faces Charles Oliveira in a featherweight match-up at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas. He’ll compete in a non-title fight for the first time since 2009, and hopes a win over Oliveira will move him closer to another championship bout. “One step closer toward a title shot,” said Edgar when asked what a win over Oliveira would mean. Oliveira (16-3, 1 No Contest) is 2-1 as a featherweight and nine of his 16 wins have come by submission. “I think he’s a dangerous fighter, long and rangy with slick submissions,” Edgar said about his opponent in a chat on UFC.com . “I guess his slick submission game might be the biggest threat.” Edgar made his featherweight debut at UFC 156 on Feb. 2, losing to champion Jose Aldo by decision. His speed and footwork was an advantage for him in the lightweight division, and he doesn’t believe anyone at 145 pounds is going to have a speed advantage over him

Heading into Friday’s RFA 8 show at 9-1, featherweight Jared “Demon Eyes” Downing looks to be one of several prospects on the card that could possibly take a step to the next level with a solid performance on the show. Even though he’s highly regarded, Downing continues to fight like he has something to prove, even if it means facing larger opposition like he’s done recently. “I feel happy with my performances (in 2012),” said Downing.” I got to go with a lot of heavier guys and I feel that even at the heavier weight, I felt explosive and had strength like I had at 145 pounds. “The bigger guys kind of got to me a little more than I had hoped for, but I definitely felt comfortable in those fights and doing what I wanted at that moment.” In his more natural division at featherweight, Downing told MMAWeekly.com that he is more dangerous. “I feel good at 145 and I have a speed advantage and a way bigger advantage in my strength and explosiveness,” he said
