LONG BEACH, Calif – The lightweight debut of A.J. McKee was one to be remembered. At Bellator 286 , McKee (19-1 MMA, 19-1 BMMA) defeated Spike Carlyle (14-4 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) via unanimous decision (29-26, 30-26, 30-27) in an all-time Bellator brawl. The fight co-headlined the event at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif. In what was seemingly one of the quickest escalations of action out of the gates in high-profile MMA history, McKee and Carlyle swung with reckless abandon. Each man landed their fair share of blows.

Former Bellator featherweight champion AJ McKee stepped into the Bellator cage as a lightweight for the first time on Saturday. Standing across the cage was Spike Carlyle, who missed weight for their bout, looking to derail the hype train even before its engine had a chance to start. Carlyle came out on fire and the fight went from zero to 60 in just seconds. It proved to be a fan-friendly affair with both men having close-to-finishing exchanges before even the fight hit the 1-minute mark. The fight went to the canvas early on with Carlyle on top but McKee setting up submission attempts

Coming into 2022 on a four-fight winning streak, lightweight Spike Carlyle was able to keep his momentum going when he faced off against Koji Takeda at RIZIN 35 this past April. By submitting Takeda just over a minute into the second round of their bout, Carlyle built his winning streak to five in a row, and made for a career-highlight experience at the same time. “Just having the whole experience of traveling to Japan and experience the culture and fight for RIZIN, and also to have a spectacular finish like that was a dream come true,” Carlyle told MMAWeekly.com. When asked about his winning streak, Carlyle is quick to point out a couple specific things he’s done of late to get his career back on track following two straight losses in 2020. “My last five fights have all been at 155 pounds and higher, so I think that fighting at a higher weight class has been tremendously helpful,” said Carlyle. “Secondly, I making some personal errors and God had to humble me when I was in the UFC

McKee (18-1 MMA, 18-1 BMMA), a former Bellator featherweight champion, will move up a division on Saturday when he meets Spike Carlyle (14-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) – who missed weight – in the Bellator 286 co-main event at Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, Calif. LOS ANGELES – Spike Carlyle wasn’t happy with how things went down at Friday’s weigh-ins. “The Alpha Ginger” missed weight by 0.6 pounds for what was supposed to be a lightweight matchup against former featherweight champion A.J. McKee (18-1 MMA, 18-1 BMMA) at Saturday’s Bellator 286 . Carlyle (14-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) registered 156.6 pounds on the official scale on his second attempt. He then argued that the California Athletic Commission’s official scale was off because the weight on the monitor changed once he stepped off the scale.
