John Lineker missed at the weigh-ins on Friday, but was dead-on the mark at UFC 163 on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, finishing Jose Maria early in the second round. Lineker’s victory wasn’t without some turbulence, though. While Lineker looked more calm and in control early in the opening round, just before the midway point, Maria rocked him with a spinning backfist. Lineker tried to answer, but was still wobbled, and ended up eating a few more shots from Maria. He tried to kick, but Maria drove him to the mat. That proved to be a saving grace for Lineker, however, as he kept scrambling and biding his time, finally making a recovery. “I got a little lost when he did that,” said Lineker after the fight. “But I was able to recover and go into my game, which is obviously striking.” That’s exactly what Lineker did, as he came out firing in round two.

After being on the receiving end of a “Knockout of the Year” candidate, Muhammed Lawal delivered one of his own at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event. In headliner of the event, Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) scored a violent first-round knockout after blasting a downed Seth Petruzelli (14-8 MMA, 1-2 BFC) with a monstrous right hand. The one-hitter quitter moved Lawal to the finale of the four-man “Summer Series” light-heavyweight tournament, where he’ll meet fellow Bellator 96 winner Jacob Noe . With the win, Lawal successfully rebounded from a spinning-backfist knockout to Emanuel Newton earlier this year. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino at Thackerville, Okla. The former Strikeforce champion was an early favorite in Bellator’s Season 8 light-heavyweight tournament, where he knocked out Przemyslaw Mysiala in the opening round before meeting the resurgent Emanuel Newton in the semifinals. In one of the early year’s biggest upsets, Newton unloaded a perfectly placed spinning backfist to drop and defeat “King Mo.” Video of the Newton vs. Lawal fight remains one of the most highly trafficked stories in MMAjunkie.com history. Many fight fans took a certain type of glee in watching Lawal, who continually dropped his hands to his waist in the fight, knocked silly by the underdog. XFC 24 Results: Scott Holtzman Makes a Statement, Captures XFC Lightweight Title

Scott Holtzman seized the night at XFC 24 on Friday night at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla., capturing the vacant XFC lightweight title. Holtzman had initially planned on facing XFC champion Nick Newell for the belt on Friday night, but that was before Newell declined the fight, was stripped of his title, and eventually exited the promotion, signing with the World Series of Fighting. With Newell out of the picture, the XFC matched Holtzman up with John Mahlow for the vacant title, and Holtzman took full advantage of the moment. Mahlow scored an early takedown, but as the fight wore on, Holtzman ramped up his takedown defense and a blistering offensive attack. He cut Mahlow with a spinning elbow, then took him down and ground and pounded in the opening round. Holtzman kept the attack going in round two, grounding Mahlow again.
