The infection is incredibly contagious and if left untreated, can be life-threatening. Unfortunately for those competing in mixed martial arts, skin-to-skin contact and unwashed wrestling mats are a major reason why staph spreads. Staph infection cases are not rare among the MMA community, and we now have another one. Despite the staph infection being in its early stages, UFC middleweight contender Brendan Allen disclosed just how much it had already begun tearing away at his skin. Allen shared pictures of himself in what looks like a hospital bed, before later showing blood oozing from a large hole in his upper arm

Drysdale is one of the most decorated grapplers in the world. He is a World Jiu-Jitsu Championship gold medalist, as well as a winner of the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championship absolute division. He has quietly amassed a 6-0 record in professional mixed martial arts competition, since beginning his transition to the sport in 2010. Holding true to his background in grappling – and similar to UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey – Drysdale has submitted all six of his opponents and all in the first round. In fact, he has never gone longer than 2:54 in an MMA bout. Drysdale will, however, have to wait to make his UFC debut due to the staph infection. There has been no word from UFC officials yet on whether or not they have found a replacement to step in and face Oliveira or if they will scrap the bout altogether

The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the scratch. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) could not immediately confirm the change, and as of Tuesday morning, the bout is still listed on UFC.com. Drysdale (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was slated to fight fellow light heavyweight Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 163, which takes place Aug. 3 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Drysdale was slotted in the Facebook-streamed preliminary card, which precede additional prelims on FX and a pay-per-view main card. It’s not clear if a replacement will be sought. Drysdale, a world champion grappler who was born in the U.S.
