A slew of health issues have forced Stefan Struve to walk away from MMA for good. Monday, the Dutch heavyweight announced he has retired from MMA and detailed his struggles with an inner ear issue that have caused him vertigo issues, loss of hearing and tinnitus. Struve mentioned he was contacted by the UFC this past week for a fight, but decided to decline and hang up his gloves.

Tuivasa (11-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) had three straight losses entering their heavyweight fight, while Struve (29-13 MMA, 13-11 UFC) had dropped four of his past five. Tuivasa was better able to translate his sense of urgency into action in the cage, as he pushed the pace and caused the “Skyscraper” to topple in the final second of the opening round. ABU DHABI – Stefan Struve likes his odds for Saturday night. The heavyweight veteran feels confident about his matchup with Tai Tuivasa at UFC 254. Struve (29-12 MMA, 13-10 UFC) thinks if he’s on point he should be able to top Tuivasa anywhere the fight takes place. “He’s an exciting fighter, he always brings something to the table that not a lot of people have, and that’s personality to his fighting style,” Struve told reporters, including MMA Junkie, when asked about his opponent at UFC 254 media day. “I think it’s a good matchup for me.

The MMA world waits in hope for the sport to bounce back once the novel coronavirus pandemic has subsided. But one UFC fighter is keeping his expectations low regarding a potential fight on home soil in late 2020. Speaking to the Epic MMA Podcast in the Netherlands, Dutch UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve said he thought the promotion had plans for an event in his homeland, but admitted he is unsure if it will return to the schedule when MMA eventually gets back on its feet again. “I was in talks with the UFC for this summer, but I don’t think that it will continue,” said Struve (via translation from Epic MMA’s Giovanni Tjin ).

Controversial. That’s the word which best sums up Stefan Struve ’s return to MMA competition. The Dutch heavyweight returned to action Saturday at UFC on ESPN 7 in Washington, D.C., where he faced fellow veteran Ben Rothwell. Struve (29-12 MMA, 13-10 UFC) lost the bout via technical knockout in the third round, but suffered two illegal shots to the groin in the process – one in Round 1 and the other towards the end of the second. The second groin shot ended up in a point deduction for Rothwell.

WASHINGTON – Ben Rothwell snapped his three-fight losing skid, but admitted he had to temper his celebrations after his victory over Stefan Struve came in somewhat controversial fashion. Rothwell (37-12 MMA, 7-6 UFC) already had been warned for a low blow after he connected with a kick to Struve’s groin in the first round that forced the towering Dutchman to use all of his allotted five-minute injury timeout in order to recover. When Rothwell misplaced a second kick in the second round, Struve (29-12 MMA, 13-10 UFC) went down again in clear agony. After advice from his corner – and, controversially, from referee Dan Miragliotta – Struve opted to continue the fight and Rothwell finished his man with three seconds remaining in the round. It was a much-needed win for the native of Kenosha, Wis., but he said he knew he had to pull back on his planned celebrations after the nature of his victory. “I had a cool speech and everything ready, but not with an asterisk,” he said backstage at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C
