Phil Davis On UFC 163 Bout with Lyoto Machida: “I’m Going to Win This Fight”

UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis hopes to finish former titleholder Lyoto Machida at UFC 163 and move next in line to fight for the 205-pound championship. Davis (11-1, 1 no contest) is ranked seventh in the official UFC Fighter Rankings . Machida (19-3) is considered the top contender in the division. A win over the former champion would shoot Davis up the rankings, but he doesn’t put much stock in fighter rankings. “I don’t really know where I fit in the whole title contention picture. I don’t really go by the rankings. I looked at the rankings once. I was disappointed, so I never looked at them again, and I just kind of go fight by fight,” said Davis during a recent media conference call. “I won my last fight. I really want to get a finish

Rory MacDonald is one of the most even keel fighters in the UFC , in and out of the cage. Even though his UFC on Fox 8 opponent, Jake Ellenberger , has been taking verbal jabs at him at every turn, MacDonald isn’t rattled. Thus far, he’s kept his cool attitude intact and intends to keep it all the way to the Octagon on Saturday night in Seattle. “My message to Rory is pretty clear: for him to start tasting some flavors of baby food and find which ones you like and stock up, because this isn’t the Tears for Fears look alike contest. All I said to him was prepare for some horizontal television time, and I meant it,” Ellenberger crowed during a recent media call. “I am an evidence-based abuser,” he continued. “I didn’t make him make the stupid decision to fight me, and I’m just going to make him look stupid when I destroy him.” For many fighters, such boisterous claims would come off as overcompensation for fears that he didn’t match up, but for Ellenberger, that’s not the case. It’s his own brand of confidence and an attempt bounce around in MacDonald’s head.

UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger has recently gone after his UFC on Fox 8 opponent Rory MacDonald via Twitter. He has referred to MacDonald as “McDummy,” called the Canadian an idiot, and asked his followers, “Which round is Rory getting melted?” MacDonald fired back questioning Ellenberger’s chin and promising to send Ellenberger back to reality. Ellenberger was asked about his Twitter attacks during a media conference call on Tuesday promoting the July 27 UFC on Fox 8 event. “I haven’t said anything that wasn’t true and my message to Rory is pretty clear: start tasting some flavors of baby food and find one you like and stock up because this isn’t a Tears for Fears lookalike contest,” he said. “All I said is for him to prepare for some horizontal television time, and I meant it.” Confident, Ellenberger is excited for the match-up and doesn’t think the 23-year-old MacDonald has ever faced anyone like him. “I’m going out there to perform and to win. Rory doesn’t have a choice where this fight goes. This fight goes where I want it to go, and I’ve shown that in past fights,” said Ellenberger. “He has shown that he has potential, but he has not faced anybody like me. I’m stoked to get in there.” On Twitter, Ellenberger stated that it was a bad idea for MacDonald to accept a fight with him and he continued with that stance on the conference call. “I’m an evidence-based abuser,” he said. “I didn’t make him make the stupid decision to fight me. With Rogerio Nogueira Injured, Chael Sonnen Lobbies for UFC 161 Bout with Shogun Rua

Chael Sonnen has never been one to shy away from poking and prodding his way into a fight, something he’s trying to do again with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira injured and out of his UFC 161 bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Sonnen offered his services on last-minute notice when Dan Henderson was injured and fell out of his scheduled UFC 151 bout with Jon Jones . The fight didn’t happen then, but Sonnen was later rewarded for his offer with a coaching slot opposite Jones on season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter and a shot at the champ at UFC 159. Sonnen lost the bout to Jones, but regardless of the outcome, his stock rose to an all-time high. Love him or hate him, everyone knows the name Chael Sonnen. After deciding not to retire following the Jones fight, Sonnen tried to goad Wanderlei Silva into a fight, but the Brazilian was slow on the uptake and Sonnen moved on. With Nogueira withdrawing from the Shogun bout due to reported trouble with his back, Sonnen pounced on the opportunity to throw his name in the mix as a possible replacement. He tweeted a message out to Shogun, noting that he is currently without a fight and available to step in… utilizing his unique vernacular.
