After all, back-to-back defeats are almost always guaranteed to earn a fighter his walking papers. Surviving three defeats is nearly miraculousness. A fourth?

Nearly the entire time Frankie Edgar was the UFC’s lightweight champion, his boss was dropping hints left and right. UFC President Dana White wanted Edgar to drop down to featherweight since he was an undersized lightweight. But there obviously was a problem with that – Edgar kept winning. But after back-to-back losses to Benson Henderson , the first surrendering his 155-pound title, and the second, in a rematch, unable to reclaim it, Edgar finally answered the featherweight call. The timing was right, and he got an immediate title shot against Jose Aldo . And he lost that fight, too, giving him three straight losses.

With two straight losses and three in his past four fights, not to mention a recent drug suspension, the presumed inclination would be to worry. Mitch Clarke had his back against the wall a week ago, and he knew it. The Canadian had two straight losses, and they happened to come in his only two UFC fights. Going 0-2 in the UFC these days usually gets you a pink slip. Going 0-3 is pretty much a certainty. So that had Clarke (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) plenty motivated for his UFC 161 fight in Winnipeg a week ago against John Maguire (18-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC)

WINNIPEG – The other side of the coin for Rashad Evans on Saturday night was not going to be a good thing. And he was just one judge and one round away from it. Evans (18-3-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) took a split decision against Dan Henderson (29-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC) in the main event of UFC 161, which took place at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. In a close back-and-forth light heavyweight fight, just a few moves different here or there could’ve been the difference between Evans snapping a two-fight skid – or Evans going down for the third straight time. It was the second straight close split-decision loss for Henderson after a February setback against Lyoto Machida at UFC 157, and with two straight losses, the chances of Henderson competing for a UFC title ever again dropped to slim – as would former champ Evans’ had he been on the other end of the split call.
