Much of the MMA world was shocked nearly two weeks ago, not that Chris Weidman beat Anderson Silva to win the UFC’s middleweight title, but the manner in which he did it. Weidman stopped Silva in the second round, stopping his 16-fight UFC win streak and 10 straight title defenses, but also becoming the first man to ever knock out the Brazilian pound-for-pound great. Count UFC commentators Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan among those who were left stunned by the way the fight went down. Now you can go behind the scenes of UFC 162, which took place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and see some unique footage of Goldberg and Rogan seconds after Silva was laid out on the canvas by the challenger. Gilbert Melendez finds 15-minute silver lining on path back to UFC title fight

Gilbert Melendez saw Benson Henderson ‘s hand get raised, and right away he started looking for the silver lining. It didn’t take long for the former Strikeforce lightweight champion to find one after Henderson beat him by split-decision in a UFC title fight at UFC on FOX 7 in April. “I’m excited to fight three five-minute rounds,” Melendez recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “Initially after I lost, the first thing on my mind more than anything was, ‘Heck yeah – 15 minutes, that’s way easier.’ I’ve been training for 25-minute fights my last 10 fights, and it’s kind of tough on the body.” And because Melendez has indeed been in 10 straight title fights – going the full 25 minutes six times – he’ll get a welcome training reprieve now, while trying to work his way back to where he wants to be, and that’s back in another title fight. The road back there for Melendez (21-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) starts against Diego Sanchez (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) in October at UFC 166 in Houston, a fight booking first reported by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com)

Manager: Anderson Silva anxious to reclaim UFC belt, will fulfill contract

Anderson Silva is anxious to reclaim his UFC middleweight title from Chris Weidman . In fact, the 38-year-old expects it to be just one of the nine remaining fights he plans to fulfill on his existing contract. Just prior to this past weekend’s announcement that Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) vs. Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) II will take place Dec. 28 as UFC 168′s pay-per-view headliner at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena, the ex-champ’s manager, Ed Soares, told AXS TV’s ” Inside MMA ” that the fighter is anxious to reclaim his belt. Silva, of course, suffered a shocking second-round TKO loss to Weidman on July 6 at UFC 162. It ended the longtime champion’s streak of 16 consecutive UFC wins and 10 straight title defenses

Can Chris Weidman do what no one else in the UFC has been able to do – dethrone Anderson Silva ? The buzz seems to be that Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has a better shot than just about anyone before him of knocking off Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC), who long has been considered the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter. Now hear what the fighters themselves think about that possibility. Silva defends his middleweight title against Weidman in the main event of UFC 162, which takes place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Silva will be going after an extension of his record, looking for his 11th straight title defense and 17th straight UFC victory. Weidman has earned his shot by being unbeaten in the UFC, himself. Silva opened as slightly more than a 2-to-1 favorite (-215) against Weidman. But not since he fought Dan Henderson at UFC 82 has Silva been favorite by this little – currently between -240 and -280 – against an opponent.
