Charles Oliveira vs. Estevan Payan added to UFC 166

Featherweights Charles Oliveira (16-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and Estevan Payan (14-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) are the latest additions to this fall’s UFC 166 lineup. The Houston Chronicle first reported the matchup, which UFC officials later confirmed. The fight is expected for the event’s preliminary-card, though it’s not clear whether it will serve on the FOX Sports 1-televised or Facebook-streamed portion. UFC 166 takes place Oct. 19 at Houston’s Toyota Center and is headlined by a rubber match between heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and ex-champ Junior dos Santos . Despite a good showing in his most recent outing, Oliveira is badly in need of a win in the UFC. The Texas-based Brazilian took on ex-champ Frankie Edgar at UFC 162 and lost a unanimous decision. Previously, he was knocked out by Cub Swanson at UFC 152

A featherweight match between Charles Oliveira and Estevan Payan has been added to the UFC 166 fight card slated for Oct. 19 in Houston. Oliveira (16-4-1) debuted in the UFC as an undefeated fighter against Darren Elkins in August 2010, winning by submission. He has gone 4-4-1 during his UFC tenure and is coming off back-to-back losses Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar in his last two outings. Oliveira has faced nothing but top competition since arriving in the organization, but is in desperate need of a victory. Payan (14-4, 1 no contest) made his UFC debut against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 160 on May 25, losing by unanimous decision. He’ll be looking to earn his first UFC win when he faces Oliveira. George Roop vs. Francisco Rivera Added to UFC 166 Fight Card in Houston

The UFC has added a bantamweight bout between George Roop and Francisco Rivera to the UFC 166 fight card slated for Oct. 19 in Houston. Roop (14-9-1) has been on a tumultuous ride during his UFC tenure, managing a 3-3 record in the Octagon. He has, however, won his last two bouts. After losing back-to-back bouts to Hatsu Hioki and Cub Swanson , Roop rebounded with victories over Reuben Duran and former WEC champion Brian Bowles.

UFC featherweight contender Cub Swanson wants a title shot against champion Jose Aldo , but isn’t going to sit around and wait for it to happen. Riding a five-fight winning streak and finishing four of his last five opponents, Swanson has positioned himself on a short list of names at the top of the 145-pound division. Aldo is scheduled to face Chan Sung Jung , “The Korean Zombie,” on August 3 at UFC 163 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and if Swanson has to take another fight before getting a crack at the title, he has some names in mind. “Well, if they are going to give someone else Aldo then that’s way too long for me to wait. I’m in prime position right now. I’m doing well. There’s no sense in me waiting, but I do want that fight and if I have to fight one more time then I would like the Ricardo Lamas fight or the Frankie Edgar fight,” Swanson told MMAWeekly.com content partner Knockout Radio . “There’s also Chad Mendes , but he’s got to get through my teammate, Clay Guida , first,” he added. “So my first choice would be Aldo. I don’t think The Korean Zombie is going to beat him and so then after that it would either be Lamas or Edgar. They’d be my next choices.” Taking another fight in the talent-rich 145-pound division is risky, but it’s a risk Swanson is willing to take. “I’ve thought about that and I just think that if I did, for some reason, lose because the talent is so high, I wouldn’t get down on myself. I would just make the adjustments and try to get right back on a win streak because at this point of my career and in my life, I’m having so much fun fighting and I just like to get out there and do it,” he said

Next month, 145-pound champion Jose Aldo puts his title on the line against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung , at UFC 163. It’s a fight that came about only after former WEC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis fell out of the title fight with a knee injury. Jung then was moved into the slot – after more than a year off recovering from injuries. That title opportunity came much to the chagrin of fighters like Ricardo Lamas , who was scheduled to meet the “Zombie” at this past weekend’s UFC 162, and Cub Swanson . But Jung has the title shot nonetheless, with Lamas and Swanson waiting in the wings. Cub Swanson just keeps on doing work, and not he wouldn’t mind a little reward. He’s got a couple in mind, in case the UFC is listening. Why not give him the next title shot? And in lieu of that, how ’bout a crack at avenging his only UFC loss? Swanson (20-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) on Saturday knocked out Dennis Siver (21-9 MMA, 10-6 UFC) to open up the main card of UFC 162, which took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

(This story appeared in today’s edition of USA TODAY .) It’s no small thing to build a new weight class in the UFC. But if what’s going on in the 145-pound division these days proves anything, it is that patience pays off. UFC 162 on Saturday featured two fights in the featherweight class — one between ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (16-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC) and Charles Oliveira (16-4-1 MMA, UFC 4-4-1), and another between Cub Swanson (20-5 MMA, 5-1) against Germany’s Dennis Siver (21-9 MMA, 10-6 UFC). Both bouts won $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses. UFC 163 in August will be headlined by another featherweight bout, this one for the title, as champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) defends his belt against “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung (13-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC). The debut event on Fox Sports 1 in Boston two weeks later is set for at least four featherweight bouts, including Ireland’s up-and-coming Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC). It all adds up to what could be a breakout summer for the division that, as recently as three years ago, was deemed not quite good enough for the likes of the UFC
