Sonnen’s quotes rang throughout the blogosphere and MMA fans began to salivate at the prospect of the brash American battling “The Axe Murderer” from Brazil. Talk of the potential showdown was subsequently nixed when UFC president Dana White explained that he contacted Silva, and the Brazilian apparently demanded a portion of the PPV cut or he would not fight

RIO DE JANEIRO – In a battle of “Ultimate Fighter” veterans, Sergio Moraes put his Brazilian jiu-jitsu on display to stop Neil Magny. Magny brought a big reach advantage into the fight, but once Moraes worked his way past that, he cruised when the fight hit the canvas. The home-country fan favorite sank in a triangle choke, then transitioned to a mounted triangle to force Magny to tap at the 3:13 mark of the first round. The welterweight bout took place today at UFC 163 at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena. It aired on FX ahead of the pay-per-view main card. Magny tried to use his nine-inch reach advantage early to keep Moraes at distance. But eventually, Moraes was able to get inside with him, clinch up and land a trip takedown. And that was the beginning of the end for Magny, a Season 16 semifinalist on “The Ultimate Fighter.” From there, Moraes, the runner-up on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” transitioned to side control and tried to go to work with Magny by controlling his head

Chael Sonnen Signs New UFC Contract, Intends to Drop Back to Middleweight After Shogun

Chael Sonnen has a light heavyweight bout on tap with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston, but after that, he’s headed back to middleweight. Sonnen moved up to light heavyweight to coach opposite Jon Jones on The Ultimate Fighter and then challenge him for his belt at UFC 159. Sonnen failed in his attempt to win the title, but agreed to another bout at 205 pounds to help launch the new Fox Sports 1 network on Aug. 17. After that, with a new contract in hand, he’ll be dropping back down to middleweight. “I’ll return to middleweight after beating Shogun,” said Sonnen on Tuesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight .

Erick Silva made quick work of Jason High at UFC on Fuel TV 10 in Fortaleza, Brazil, on Saturday night, re-establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the promotion’s welterweight division. High tried to shoot on Silva, but the Brazilian sprawled out and quickly outmaneuvered High, wrestling him to the mat, and taking his back. From there, Silva slid off to the side, securing High’s arm as he did so. Silva stretched out the armbar, leaving High with no other option but to tap out. Silva was one of the most highly anticipated Brazilian prospects to enter the UFC in quite some time. He is now 3-2 in the Octagon

UFC on FUEL TV 10 results: Raphael Assuncao taps Vaughan Lee to go to 4-0 at 135

FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Raphael Assuncao knew exactly where he wanted his bout with Vaughan Lee to be contested, and it didn’t take long to see why. After a first round controlled almost entirely by Assuncao on the mat, the Brazilian turned up the heat in the second frame and locked up an armbar to force the tap at 1:51 of Round 2. The bantamweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FUEL TV 10 event at Paulo Sarasate Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. It streamed on Facebook ahead of a main card on FUEL TV. Early on it was clear that Assuncao had the advantage on the mat, as Lee seemed fortunate to survive the opening round after getting mounted early on. When he was unable to stop Assuncao’s takedown to start the second, things only got worse. “I was training specifically to be able to fight Vaughan Lee because he’s a very good striker, and my strategy worked,” Assuncao said via an interpreter after the victory. Though specifying that he didn’t want “to say anyone’s name,” Assuncao added, “All I want is the chance to go for the title.” Assuncao (19-4 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has now won four straight in the UFC since dropping to 135 pounds in 2011

Bobby Lashley earns second-round win at Titan FC 25

In his first fight in more than a year, former Strikeforce heavyweight Bobby Lashley picked up a second-round submission victory in the headliner of Friday’s Titan FC 25 event. With the fight on the mat, Lashley (8-2) tapped out veteran Kevin Asplund (15-5) with a keylock, who’s now dropped four straight since an eight-year, 15-fight win streak. The bout aired on AXS TV from Marshall Army Airfield in Fort Riley, Kan. Lashley, a former WWE champion who hadn’t fought MMA since a decision loss to James Thompson at Super Fight League 3 in May 2012, cruised in the fight. He scored multiple takedowns, moved to dominant positions with ease, and after looking for the crucifix position, ultimately settled on a keylock that drew a tap at the 1:23 mark of the round
