Catching up with Bellator’s Patricky Freire before Rizin lightweight grand prix

Patricky Freire wants some gold but hasn’t been able to accomplish that goal during his more than eight-year run with Bellator. And so, the older “Pitbull,” who is the brother to Bellator dual champion Patricio, will try to make it happen with Rizin FF. On Saturday at Rizin FF 19, Freire (21-8) will take part in the Japanese promotion’s lightweight grand prix as he meets Tatsuya Kawajiri (37-13-2) in the quarterfinals of the eight-man tournament. It will be Freire’s first fight in eight months as he looks to extend his winning streak to six. Ahead of the start of the tournament, MMA Junkie caught up with Freire. The first-round pairings for Rizin FF’s lightweight grand prix tournament have been announced, with Bellator’s 155-pound star Patricky Freire drawn to face a former UFC veteran in his first matchup as he looks to punch his ticket to the semi-finals. Freire (21-8 MMA) will make his promotional Rizin FF debut in the tournament as he looks to extend his five-fight win streak at the expense of 41-year-old veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri (37-13 MMA, 2-3 Rizin), who booked his place in the tournament after handing Russian Ali Abdulkhalikov the first defeat of his MMA career at Rizin FF 17 in July.

Rizin FF 17 results: Asakura impresses with dominant decision victory in Saitama

Lightweight contender Mikuru Asakura showed off his slick stand-up prowess as he struck his way to a unanimous decision victory over Yusuke Yachi in the main event of Rizin FF 17 in the Saitama Super Arena on Sunday. Asakura (11-1 MMA, 5-0 Rizin) started the better of the pair and swept Yachi (20-9 MMA, 5-3 Rizin) to the floor with his first kick of the contest before both men settled into their work. And as the bout progressed it quickly became apparent that Asakura held a significant striking advantage as the 27-year-old used his slick hands and smart footwork to keep Yachi chasing shadows for much of the contest. There was a touch of controversy at the end of the second round when referee Jason Herzog opted not to punish Asakura for repeated rope grabs to prevent being taken to the canvas.

‘RIZIN FF 5: Sakura’ lineup set with 11 bouts, streams for $14.99 on FITE TV

The 11-bout lineup for this month’s “RIZIN FF 5: Sakura” event is now official, and the card has a global broadcast home, as well. RIZIN FF officials recently announced that RIZIN FF 5, which takes place April 16 at Yokohama Arena in Japan, will stream live on FITE TV for $14.99. “I hope fans across the globe can experience Japanese MMA first-hand from women’s fights to the fast and technical flyweight fights and world-class heavyweights battling one another, along with the overall spectacle atmosphere we deliver,” RIZIN FF Chairman Nobuyuki Sakakibara stated. The action kicks off at 3 p.m. local time (2 a.m. ET)

Filed under: News Rizin FF’s New Year’s Eve event is coming together with some big names in some big fights. The promotion today announced bouts between Kron Gracie (3-0) and Tatsuya Kawajiri (35-10-2) at featherweight and a rematch between Charles Bennett (30-30-2) and Minoru Kimura (0-1) at lightweight. The event takes place Dec. 31 at Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo. Bennett knocked off Wanderlei Silva prodigy Kimura in the Brazilian’s professional debut at the Rizin FF World Grand-Prix 2016 Opening Round event in September, taking only seven seconds to end the fight by TKO. The two are set to run it back after a first fight as memorable for the post fight celebration of “Krazy Horse” as the fight itself.
