Manager says Chael Sonnen to be licensed for UFC Fight Night 26

Chael Sonnen apparently will be licensed to fight at UFC Fight Night 26, according to his manager. Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., which represents the fighter, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that a closed-door meeting of the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission went in Sonnen’s favor. “They had a panel, we had a meeting with them, and as far as we know, they’re going to license him,” he said. “As far as we know, it will be just like everybody else’s license.” The decision clears the way for Sonnen to headline the event opposite Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. As of Wednesday, the three-time UFC title challenger didn’t have a license to fight . According to a prepared statement issued the same day, the MSAC preliminarily agreed to allow Sonnen to fight at the event, which takes place Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden, but assembled its medical board to discuss the fighter’s use of testosterone-replacement therapy.

UFC invites Boston fans to open workouts, press conference, more

The UFC returns to Boston next week for its debut event on FOX Sports 1, and fans are invited to a host of activities around Beantown. The city’s TD Garden is the site of next week’s “UFC Fight Night 26: Shogun vs. Sonnen” event, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 17, and airs both main-card and preliminary matchups on the brand-new FOX Sports 1 channel following three additional prelim contests that stream on Facebook. However, the UFC-related activities start much earlier in the week. The sessions start on Tuesday, Aug. 13, where Peter Welch’s Gym plays to a workout for fast-rising Irish featherweight Conor McGregor , who meets Max Holloway at next week’s UFC Fight Night 26 event. McGregor’s workout starts at 3 p.m.

LAS VEGAS – When Irish featherweight Conor McGregor (13-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), heard he was getting a new opponent at next month’s UFC Fight Night 26 event (formerly known as UFC on FOX Sports 1 1), he offered up an idea for UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby: top-ranked 145-pounder Ricardo Lamas (13-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC). “I wanted Rircardo Lamas,” McGregor admitted Wednesday at a press luncheon in Las Vegas. McGregor was originally slated to meet Andy Ogle at the event, which takes place on Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden. When Ogle was forced to withdraw from the card, McGregor was in need of a new opponent.

UFC Affirms It Is Working on Compliance for UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen Athletes

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is headed to Boston on Aug. 17 for its sophomore effort in the city. UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen is slated for the TD Gardens and is set to serve as featured programming for the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports channel, Fox Sports 1. A Boston Herald report on Tuesday brought to light an issue that UFC officials faced in regards to all mixed martial arts competitors in Massachusetts being required to have a valid Social Security number, even foreign-born participants. The report noted that the UFC was seeking an exemption from the law, and suggested that the event could be cancelled altogether if things weren’t worked out. The report jumped the gun a good bit, as UFC sources assured MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday that the event “is not in danger, and we’re working on getting visas and social security numbers.
