Below is a recap of the early prelims. **** Bermudez cruises past Edwards in lightweight debut, retires after Dennis Bermudez (17-9 MMA, 10-7 UFC) snapped his four-fight losing skid and made a successful debut in the lightweight division with a dominant performance against Te Edwards (6-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) that ended in a unanimous decision victory. After a slow first round, Bermudez got into his groove big time in the second and third frames. He pressed the action on the feet so he could find openings for his takedowns, and from there threatened with all types of submissions

NEW YORK – Te Edwards was indulging in some comfort food on Christmas Eve when he received a surprise text message from his manager asking if he’d be ready to fight just 26 days later. He said he felt compelling to agree. Fortunately for Edwards (7-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC), he’s one of the athletes who looks at his career as an MMA fighter as a full-time gig. He said he stays in solid shape year round, so that’s why he was able to accept the proposed matchup with Dennis Bermudez (16-9 MMA, 9-7 UFC) on Saturday’s card. “I think I had a doughnut in hand as (my manager Jason House) texted me,” Edwards told MMAjunkie at UFC on ESPN+ 1 media day. “I was like, ‘I’ll finish this one, then we should probably clean it up a little bit and get some workouts in.’ I had just got off the concussion protocol, so I was enjoying my doughnuts and pizza.

Former Cage Warriors lightweight champ Chris Fishgold will make his octagon debut next month at UFC Fight Night 138. Fishgold (17-1-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who signed with the UFC earlier this year after going 8-0 under the European-based Cage Warriors organization, is set to take on Calvin Kattar (18-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a 145-pound bout on the card. UFC officials recently announced the fight, as well a lightweight booking between Te Edwards (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Don Madge (7-4-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC). UFC Fight Night 138 takes place Oct. 27 at SMG Moncton in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. The card is expected to air on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass

LAS VEGAS – Now that Te Edwards officially is part of the UFC roster, he’s ready to start making some money. Judging from the way it’s been so far in his MMA career, there’s a pretty good chance he can make his UFC bucks courtesy of his heavy hands. Edwards (6-1) needed just 28 seconds to knock out Austin Tweedy (10-2) on Tuesday night at Dana White’s Contender Series 11, which took place at The Ultimate Fighter Gym in Las Vegas and streamed on UFC Fight Pass. The KO was enough, not surprisingly, to earn Edwards a contract from UFC President Dana White. But Edwards said he’s not going into fights looking for knockouts – even though all six of his pro wins have been first-round KOs. He’s got a total fight time of 8:37 in those six wins for an average of just 1:26 per victory.

Dana White’s Contender Series 11 took place Tuesday in Las Vegas, and we’re grading the winners from the five-fight card, which streamed on UFC Fight Pass from The Ultimate Fighter Gym. With a refreshing but digestible format that has fans of the sport responding, this series has shown to have legs beyond its summer seasons while serving as a crockpot for contenders the UFC matchmakers can use for future events. With that trend in mind, I’ve decided to take a look at the winning fighters, regardless of whether or not they won a UFC contract, while grading their performances in regards to their probability of returning to a UFC stage. With all five victorious fighters producing solid finishes, I also touch on the prospects of each winner’s ventures into their respective divisions
