UFC Fight Night 26′s Yuri Alcantara wanted to train with Urijah Faber

BOSTON – Had things worked out differently, Yuri Alcantara might be feeling a little more awkward about his upcoming fight with Urijah Faber . Alcantara (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) flirted with the idea of training at the Team Alpha Male gym where Faber (28-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC) hangs his hat. The two might have made for some spirited sparring, but the Brazilian Alcantara, who most recently beat Iliarde Santos at UFC on FX 8, didn’t wind up making the trek for Sacramento, Calif., where Faber’s gym resides. Good thing, because not long afterward, they were booked to fight each other at UFC Fight Night 26, which takes place Saturday at TD Garden in Boston.

function not found Having to drop out of a fight for the first time in her professional career, women’s 145-pound up-and-comer Veronica “Heartbreaker” Rothlenhauser was not pleased, but ultimately feels it may have helped in the long run. “I wasn’t going to pull out from the fight. I still planned on fighting, but once they (pulled my opponent at Invicta FC 5 to replace another fighter on the card) I decided to get an MRI on my knee,” said Rothlenhauser. “I told them the situation and Janet (Martin) and I decided to wait until this card to have this fight. “At Team Alpha Male, if there’s a fight camp, it’s no joke. Once you’re in the midst of it, it’s for real. That sucked being a week out, but I think everything happens for a reason.” The time off allowed Rothlenhauser to work more extensively with Alpha Male’s newest coaching addition, UFC veteran Duane “Bang” Ludwig .

T.J. Dillashaw meets Raphael Assuncao at UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 in Brazil

Team Alpha Male’s September trip to Brazil has increased by one for a key matchup at bantamweight. T.J. Dillashaw (8-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has been booked for a bout against Raphael Assuncao (20-4 MMA, 4-1 UFC) when the UFC returns to Belo Horizonte for UFC on FOX Sports 1 3. Globo first reported the news, though UFC officials have yet to make a formal announcement. UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 takes place Sept. 4 at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It will be the UFC’s second visit to the city after first visiting for UFC 147 in 2012. Dillashaw joins teammate Joseph Benavidez , who fights Jussier Formiga at flyweight, as Team Alpha Male fighters on the card in Brazil.

Duane Ludwig discusses retirements plans, Team Alpha Male’s first champion

The more comfortable Duane “Bang” Ludwig gets with his head-coaching duties at Team Alpha Male, the more unlikely he is to make his own return to the cage. The 34-year-old UFC vet, who recently took over as head instructor for the fast-rising California squad, hasn’t officially decided on retirement, but he said he’s close. “I’m not retired, not officially yet,” he told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “But it’s leaning toward that direction.” “Bang” accepted the Team Alpha Male gig in December, a few months after he blew out his knee in an eventual loss to Che Mills at UFC on FUEL TV 5. It marked his third straight defeat, though his fights camps had been plagued by injuries that hindered his preparation. Although he misses fighting, Ludwig has found plenty of satisfaction in contributing to the careers of Team Alpha Male fighters such as Urijah Faber , Chad Mendes , Joseph Benavidez , Danny Castillo , T.J.

While he considered a number of camps to call home, Palmer said his choice of Team Alpha Male has proven wise, indeed. “I talked to a few different people,” Palmer told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “I was considering AKA and a couple of other teams, also, but Team Alpha Male, we all have kind of the same personalities, and we all mesh well together. It was just easy for me to fit in there. After I came out and visited with those guys, that was my only choice.” It’s proven a wise choice so far.
