Bellator 97 Sees Significant TV Ratings Increase Over First Summer Series Event

Like most summer television programming, Bellator’s Summer Series events have struggled to garner much steam in the TV ratings. Bellator 97 on Wednesday night did reasonably well, however, drawing and average audience of 679,000 viewers on Spike TV, which is well above the 480,000 viewers that Bellator 96 drew on June 19. Bellator’s Season 8 averaged just under 800,000 viewers per event, but that was during the much more viewer friendly winter and spring months. Bellator 97 benefited from a strong fight card that featured two title bouts and the light heavyweight tournament final, which King Mo Lawal won.

Invicta FC Will Soon Join Reality Television with Its Own Reality Series

It was a reality show in 2005 that catapulted the Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed martial arts into the mainstream with the debut of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV. Bellator MMA launched its reality series, Fight Master: Bellator MMA , in June. Invicta FC will join the promotions with reality shows in the near future. Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp made the announcement following Invicta FC 6 on July 13. “We’re doing a reality series that will be completely different than the format of what the UFC is doing and what Bellator is doing,” said Knapp. “It will give an opportunity for these athletes to be more known and elevated in the eyes of the public and all that kind of thing.” Invicta FC, an all-female fight promotion, held its first event in April 2012 and has seen steady growth in its first year of existence. “I think it’s important for the athletes to know that we’re striving and moving forward every day, and I think that gives them even more to fight for and be excited about,” she said. “I mean, come on. Look at these girls. Can you imagine watching a show with all these personalities that we have here in Invicta? This show is going to be amazing.” The organization is currently working on a pilot for the reality series. As Bellator continues to expand, so does the role of former featherweight champion Joe Warren . As part of the recently debuted reality television series Fight Master: Bellator MMA , Warren joins Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock and Greg Jackson as a quartet of coaches vying to get a fighter from their respective teams into this upcoming season’s welterweight tournament. Fight Master airs weekly on Wednesday nights on Spike TV at 10 p.m. ET.
