When the Manitoba Combative Sports Commission recently revealed it didn’t grant any therapeutic-use exemptions for June’s UFC 161 event, it raised more than a few eyebrows. After all, shouldn’t have MMA legend Dan Henderson ‘s name appeared on the list? Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who has been granted exemptions (TUEs) for his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) since 2007, said there’s a simple explanation for why he didn’t receive an exemption for the event: He pulled his application when it seemed the Manitoba commission wasn’t likely to approve it. “It didn’t look like they would approve it, so I just quit taking the testosterone,” Henderson told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I stopped about six to eight weeks out. I was told by my doctor that wouldn’t be a problem at all. I wasn’t using that much, anyway.” Henderson fought in the main event of UFC 161, which took place June 15 in Winnipeg.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued no new therapeutic-use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy at UFC 162 but did give UFC middleweight Chris Leben permission to use the prescription opioid medication Suboxone. Leben (22-10 MMA, 12-9 UFC), who lost a split decision to Andrew Craig (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at this past Saturday’s event, is the first fighter to receive an exemption for the drug, which typically is used as a replacement therapy for people with narcotic dependency. NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer confirmed the news today with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Leben was unreachable for comment. The veteran fighter’s exemption offers proof of his efforts to get clean following a well-documented struggle with drugs. In November 2011, he tested positive for oxycodone and oxymorphone following a loss to Mark Munoz at UFC 138 and was suspended by the UFC for one year.

The California State Athletic Commission has put exemptions for testosterone-replacement therapy on hold until it can update its bylaws with a policy that could make the permission slip difficult to acquire. CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that he won’t outright reject fighters who’ve previously received an exemption to use prescribed testosterone in California, but said new applications will be shelved until the regulations are changed. “I’m not going to say no (to those who previously have been approved), but no new ones will be given out,” he said. The policy, which was presented during a commission meeting on Monday in Los Angeles, outlaws TRT exemptions except for applicants with “irreversible, structural/organic hypogonadism.” In both the primary and secondary forms of the medical condition, the body fails to produce normal levels of testosterone. However, the policy draws a line between the physiological changes in the body produced by an “organic” deficiency and “functional” forms that produce none. Causes of primary and secondary organic testosterone deficiency include genetic, developmental and metabolic abnormalities; deficiencies caused by infections or disease; pituitary disorders; and traumatic brain injuries where the endocrine system is damaged, the policy states. Functional causes of deficiency include emotional distress, obesity, overtraining, aging and alcohol excess. “Organic defects are usually long lasting or permanent while functional defects are potentially reversible,” the policy states.

Vitor Belfort believes it’s important to live a life with no regrets. For that reason alone, he’s finally ready to open up about his use of testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT). “I want to leave a legacy, and the first legacy I leave is myself,” Belfort told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “If I can live with myself, I can give this to my kids. Nothing is worse than to go home and have to sell yourself to your family, to make up a whole different history of what you did, of how you lived your private life. That’s no way to live. “The TRT is my private life, but it’s become public, and it’s now a big, big thing. I believe that all the good things I’m doing, people kind of forget it and have a tendency to not pay attention or give credit for the way I’m winning fights, the way I’m working, the way I’m being an example for my Blackzilian teammates.
