The Nevada State Athletic Commission today suspended UFC bantamweight Brian Bowles for nine months and fined him 30 percent of his UFC 160 purse for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio. Bowles, who lost to George Roop via second-round TKO, is suspended retroactively to the event and forfeits $5,700 of his $19,000 purse to the commission. Unexpectedly, Bowles was present at the hearing and said he had no idea why he failed his test, according to ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto , who attended Bowles' hearing today in Las Vegas. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, the NSAC expected to proceed with its disciplinary complaint without Bowles in attendance , as the fighter hadn't responded to a written notification of his drug test failure and a temporary suspension.

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem hopes to rebound from a knockout loss to Antonio Silva at UFC 156 when he faces Travis Browne on Aug. 17 at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston. The former Strikeforce heavyweight titleholder made his UFC debut at UFC 141, defeating Brock Lesnar by technical knockout. He was scheduled to face then-champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 146, but tested positive to elevated levels of testosterone during a pre-licensing drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix champion’s application for a license was put on hold for nine months. He returned at UFC 156 against Silva in a top contender’s bout. Since the loss, Overeem has been focused on improvement. “I’ve just been really focused on my own development. I was recovering from an injury and getting back on track. I made a lot of changes in the camp and the preparation and the whole process,” Overeem said during a media conference call on Monday. “I’ve just been focused on myself and, for me, it’s important to get that win. I put 100-percent effort into that, into my preparation.” Having had two title shots slip away, Overeem’s not sure whether a win over Browne would put him back in the championship hunt. “It’s up to the gentlemen at the UFC to decide what they’re going to do next,” he said. “I’m not really thinking about all that stuff. I’m just focused on my own thing, which is getting back on track, getting the workouts in.” Overeem isn’t looking to what will come next. All of his attention is concentrated on defeating Browne. “I’ve just been focused on my thing. I’m not really focused on what other people think of me, or what’s going to happen after this fight, or who I’ll fight after. I’ve just been focused on my own thing and getting back on track,” he said.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is proceeding with a disciplinary complaint against bantamweight Brian Bowles despite not hearing back from the fighter on his failed drug test. Bowles' post-fight drug screen at UFC 160 came back with a testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of more than 20-1, according to the NSAC. The commission temporarily suspended the fighter pending a formal hearing. Bowles has the right to contest the findings, but as of yet, he hasn't responded to the complaint, NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "He never filed an answer, so it looks to be uncontested," wrote Kizer via email. Regardless, the Georgia-based fighter is likely to be suspended and fined for his failed drug test at the NSAC's next meeting, which takes place Aug.

Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., which represents the fighter, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that a closed-door meeting of the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission went in Sonnen's favor.
On Thursday, a closed-door meeting of the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission – spurred by a union complaint – will determine whether UFC fighter Chael Sonnen receives a license to fight at UFC Fight Night 26 next week. A representative for the state's Department of Public Safety, which oversees the commission, said that following a complaint from the union, the commission elected to hold the meeting after its regular session to determine whether Sonnen is appropriately using testosterone replacement therapy. "The commissioners will sit in and they'll hammer out the issue," DPS spokesman Terrel Harris today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "When they've made a final decision, they'll let everybody know what that decision was. Bottom line is that they have to do it relatively soon, because the fight's a week from Saturday." Harris believed the complaint was lodged by Unite Here, a union based in New York and Washington, D.C., and declined to reveal its contents
