Former UFC champ Tim “the Maine-iac” Sylvia is set to make his debut in SlapFIGHT Championship, America’s first regulated slap competition league, on April 22 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Though Sylvia hasn’t fought for the better part of a decade, this is a big moment for the sport and, more specifically, for SlapFIGHT. Sylvia is the first former UFC heavyweight champion to compete in this controversial new combat sport. The CEO of SlapFIGHT, JT Tilley, expressed his excitement for Silvia’s debut, stating that he has reached a multi-fight agreement with SFC and will be facing super heavyweight contender Bulldozer (1-0 SFC) in the SFC 25 main event. “We are extremely excited for the debut of Tim Sylvia at SlapFIGHT,” Tilley said

Today in MMA history: Affliction hosts star-studded ‘Banned’ event

Thirteen years ago today, one of the best heavyweight fight cards in MMA went down in the U.S., but it wasn’t part of the UFC. Back on July 19, 2008, Affliction hosted its inaugural event – Affliction: Banned, which took place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This card featured a high-profile, heavyweight matchup in the main event with the legendary Fedor Emelianenko taking on former UFC champion Tim Sylvia . Additionally, Andrei Arlovski fought Ben Rothwell and Josh Barnett took on Pedro Rizzo

Former champion Tim Sylvia starts GoFundMe to repair infected arm, says UFC denied help

Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia needs to undergo surgery to repair an old injury, but he needs help to make it happen. Sylvia suffered a gruesome broken arm just 50 seconds into his vacant heavyweight title fight against Frank Mir in June 2004 at UFC 48. He refused to tap, but referee Herb Dean stopped the fight when he saw Sylvia’s arm break. Now, 16 years after the incident, Sylvia took to Instagram to reveal new issues with his arm, as he explained that “the screws are backing out from my arm break.” He said the UFC told him “it’s not (their) problem and will not cover it.” With no insurance, Sylvia issued a plea for assistance via social media and set up a GoFundMe to help raise his target goal of $20,000. If an aging fighter was down on his luck, or just old and beloved enough, his fellow fighters would put together a show featuring gloved exhibition bouts, as well as other acts that might include singers, dancers, or in Dwyer’s case, even a demonstration of a rowing machine, all to raise funds for the man of the hour

Almost all fighters dream of winning a UFC belt; some just celebrate a little more outwardly once they get it. Remember former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia ? It became a bit of a running joke that he’d wear his UFC gold everywhere he went; it became so synonymous with “The Maine-iac” that fans never knew for sure if the latest pic of Sylvia and his belt was actually a Photoshopped version of the real thing . It’s too soon to know if newly crowned interim welterweight champion Colby Covington will develop similar around-the-waist tan lines, but in one of his first public appearance since scoring a decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos (28-10 MMA, 17-8 UFC) in this past Saturday’s UFC 225 pay-per-view co-headliner, Covington (14-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) brought the gold. “Chaos” threw out a ceremonial first pitch at Wednesday’s Miami Marlins game, and the belt came along (via Twitter ): Big thank you to UFC Champ Colby “Chaos” Covington for coming out tonight to throw the first pitch! #JuntosMiami pic.twitter.com/5iogsN0zxp — #VoteMarlins (@Marlins) June 14, 2018 Aw, doesn’t he look so sweet and happy? After 11 years as a pro fighter, followed by five more years as a retired fighter, coach and all-around lovable MMA figure, here are the final stats on Matt Serra ’s career: 11 wins, seven losses, a record of 7-7 inside the UFC, winner of Season 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” winner of the UFC welterweight title, setting up a championship reign that lasted for just over a year and included one unsuccessful attempt at a title defense. Oh, and now we can add one more thing to the list: UFC Hall of Famer . The decision was announced during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 128 broadcast, and it was followed by an interview with Serra himself, who was his usual charming self while accepting the honor (watch it above).
