Freddy Assuncao is riding an eight-fight winning streak and is set to carry that momentum into a battle for Gesias Cavalcante’s lightweight title at Titan FC 40. Assuncao (9-1) has fought irregularly over his career, competing only 10 times since turning pro in October 2009. This inactivity, Assuncao told MMAjunkie, is a product of repeated injuries. The most recent of those injuries came in his Titan FC 34 submission win over Cody Bollinger in July 2015

Jose Torres is days away from fighting for a title in only his third professional bout. Pressure isn’t new to Torres, however, because the 24-year-old was considered one of the best amateur fighters in the world before his pro debut in March at Titan FC 37. Torres (2-0) will face Abdiel Velazquez (7-2) for the interim flyweight title in the co-main event of Titan FC 40, which takes place Friday at Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The card will stream live on UFC Fight Pass. While Torres was dominant on the amateur circuit, he was occasionally taken to a decision. However, the three-minute round structure meant the idea of going the full 15 in the professional world was still outside his comfort zone

Gesias Cavalcante was once considered a can’t miss fighter at the top of the lightweight division. After a 14-1-1 start to his career, Cavalcante’s career took a quick downturn with a 4-7 run from 2008 to mid-2014. However, Cavalcante (20-8-1) has rattled off two consecutive victories – three if a Japanese bout from earlier in the year is made official – and captured the Titan FC championship with a 2:07 knockout of Pat Healy at Titan FC 39.
