Bellator 97 Sees Significant TV Ratings Increase Over First Summer Series Event

Like most summer television programming, Bellator’s Summer Series events have struggled to garner much steam in the TV ratings. Bellator 97 on Wednesday night did reasonably well, however, drawing and average audience of 679,000 viewers on Spike TV, which is well above the 480,000 viewers that Bellator 96 drew on June 19. Bellator’s Season 8 averaged just under 800,000 viewers per event, but that was during the much more viewer friendly winter and spring months. Bellator 97 benefited from a strong fight card that featured two title bouts and the light heavyweight tournament final, which King Mo Lawal won.

Francis Carmont puts his 10-fight winning streak on the line against top-ten ranked Costa Philippou at UFC 165 in Toronto. Carmont(21-7) has been impressive since his arrival in the UFC, winning five fights in a row. Training out of the Tristar Gym alongside welterweight titleholder Georges St-Pierre , Carmont will be looking to log his first win over a top-ten-ranked opponent. Philippou (12-2, 1 no contest) is riding a five-fight winning streak, including a technical knockout of Tim Boetsch in his last outing at UFC 155 in December. His lone UFC loss came in his promotional debut against Nick Catone at UFC 128. It will be Philippou’s first fight in 2013. He was expected to face Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in May, but an injury forced him out of the bout. UFC 165 takes place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and features two title bouts. The main event will showcase the UFC light heavyweight title bout between champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson . Weidman took the fight to Silva from the opening bell, taking “the Spider” down and working his ground and pound attack, but couldn’t keep him there. Silva danced and taunted Weidman for much of the latter half of the opening frame, and again to start round two. Weidman remained patient, timed his attacks, and eventually caught Silva with a left hook, flooring the UFC’s longest reigning middleweight champion and finishing him off with strikes at the 1:18 mark of the second round. UFC welterweight champion and part-time Weidman training partner Georges St-Pierre was one of the fighters who was confident that Weidman could pull off the upset, but even he was surprised by the way it ended. “I predict Chris Weidman was going to win, but I didn’t think he was going to win the way that he won,” St-Pierre told PokerListings.com . Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland Added to UFC 165 Card That Now Features Two Title Fights

The UFC interim bantamweight title bout between titleholder Renan Barao and challenger Eddie Wineland has been added to the UFC 165 fight card set for Sept. 21 in Toronto. UFC officials made the announcement on Thursday. Barao and Wineland were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 161 on June 15, but a foot injury forced Barao out of the fight. With the interim bantamweight title bout rescheduled, UFC 165 now features two title bouts. Barao (30-1, 1 no contest) won the interim title by defeating Urijah Faber at UFC 149 on July 21, 2012. The 26-year-old Brazilian hasn’t lost since 2005 and is on a 30-fight winning streak. Wineland (20-8-1) earned his title shot by defeating Brad Pickett at UFC 155 on Dec. 29.
