Ian McCall (11-4-1 MMA, 0-2-1 UFC) likes to take momentary steps away from the drain of strategizing, and in advance of his fight at UFC 163 against Iliarde Santos (27-1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), he’s got some advice for flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson . It’s direct: Be cooler. “He’s a dork, man,” McCall told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “He’s a great athlete, don’t get me wrong. He’s just socially awkward. “But he’s getting better, and I say this as advice, because it would help his career and make him more money and fans would like him more.” UFC 163 takes place Saturday at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. McCall vs. Santos opens the FX-televised preliminary-card in advance of main card fights on pay-per-view. Johnson undoubtedly won over the crowd this past Saturday at UFC on FOX 8, where he earned the first stoppage of his title reign by tapping out John Moraga in the fifth round of their title fight. UFC President Dana White awarded the champ a “Submission of the Night” bonus and said true fight fans will get behind what he does in the octagon. The event, however, reportedly drew the lowest overall ratings of the UFC’s live events on FOX, despite winning key young male demographics. There are observers who say that no matter who is at the top of the lighter-weight divisions, big ratings and pay-per-views go to bigger men. While that or may not be the case, McCall said it couldn’t hurt to have someone with that “it” factor holding the belt. That, he said, is him, or Joseph Benavidez , who Johnson beat to win the flyweight title. McCall said he and Benavidez have a likability that might help people to care about the little-man class and thus get it more attention on the pay-per-view stage. Dodson and Johnson, he said, are the kind of fighters people love to hate. “I’m not sure why people don’t like [Johnson],” McCall said.

LAS VEGAS – Anderson Silva bobbed, weaved and clowned his way to the first loss of his UFC career. The now-former UFC middleweight champion showed little respect to opponent Chris Weidman, who entered Saturday’s UFC 162 pay-per-view headliner as one of the smallest underdogs of Silva’s long title reign. As a result, MMA’s pound-for-pound kingpin and arguably the greatest fighter in the sport’s history gave away the fight as much as Weidman won it. In front of a stunned crowd at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena, Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) dropped his hands, dared Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) to take a swing, and laughed off the challenger’s attempts. That was all well and good through the first round, when Silva escaped from an early takedown and heel-hook attempt to get back to his feet and deliver some late-round leg kicks. Ex-Bellator welterweight champ Lyman Good now officially a free agent

After four years, Bellator MMA’s first welterweight champion, Lyman Good , is leaving the promotion as a free agent. Good’s legal rep, David M. Fish, announced the departure today. “The entire team at Bellator has been really good to me throughout my career and now they’ve given me the green light to go and fight anywhere I want,” Good (15-3 MMA, 8-3 BFC) stated in a press release forwarded to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). The 28-year-old Good was one of Bellator’s first stars in the promotion’s first events in 2009. He won the Season 1 welterweight tournament and inaugural welterweight title after three straight finishes. His title reign would be cut short by Season 2 tourney winner Ben Askren , who handed him a decision loss in his first defense and remains champion.

Many fighters have weighed in on the UFC 162 main event middleweight title bout between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chris Weidman . UFC women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey believes Weidman is the worst stylistic match-up for Silva, but will be pulling for Silva to retain his belt on July 6. “I think that Anderson Silva is pound-for-pound the best fighter of all time, and I really do believe that Chris Weidman is the worst style match-up for him. But if anyone can overcome the worst style match-up, it’s Anderson Silva,” said Rousey during a recent Facebook chat sponsored by Metro PCS. Silva is undefeated inside the octagon with 16 consecutive wins. He has put together the longest title reign in the promotion’s history and defended his belt a record 10 times. He holds the record for most finishes in the UFC with 14 and the most finishes in title fights with nine. But at 38-years-old, his career is winding down. “Being that Anderson is, I think, towards the end of his career, I’m going to have to just pull for Anderson just because it’s like the end of it. I kind of want him to go out hot,” said Rousey. “Chris Weidman has an amazing future ahead of him. He’s going to be around long after Anderson Silva leaves. And I think that once Anderson vacates the division that Chris Weidman, it’s very likely that he’ll hold onto the belt for a while. But you never know.” Rousey likes both fighters, but wants Silva’s legendary status to remain intact for at least one more fight. “I think they’re both very, very cool,” she said.

Despite many people saying Weidman has the tools to challenge the champ, Silva says he is ready. “The fight is the fight. I’m ready for the fight for a long time,” Silva told UFC.com . “I will be prepared to fight.” In his seven-year title reign, Silva has beaten opponents by every way imaginable: front kicks, punches, knees, elbows, chokes. Twenty of his 33 wins have been by knockout. The champion attributes his success to his training. “I believe you train 100-percent, your results will be 100-percent,” he said. “Everything that I do in the fight are things that I’ve trained.” The undefeated Weidman (9-0) is an accomplished grappler, while Silva is the most accurate precision striker the sport has ever seen.
