October brings the debut of a new promotion to the European MMA landscape, and if things go as EuroFC bosses hope, the organization will soon enjoy lofty status on its home continent. “We did a European market analysis and found out that there is a real market opportunity and consumer need for quality sports entertainment in the form of MMA,” EuroFC CEO Jarno Kukila told MMAjunkie.

BARUERI, Brazil – Renato Carneiro showed early on that he had the quicker hands and the sharper striking in his matchup against Tom Niinimaki . So when he clubbed Niinimaki (21-8-1 MMA, 1-3 UFC) to the floor midway through the second, the only surprise was that Carneiro (9-0-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) finished with a rear-naked choke instead of a torrent of punches, forcing the tap at 3:30 of Round 2 and bringing an end to a very impressive UFC debut. The featherweight bout was part of today’s UFC Fight Night 58 preliminary card at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following earlier prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Carneiro’s striking skills were on display early in this one. Stinging counters and sneaky hooks keep Niinimaki back on his heels and increasingly defensive as the fight wore on, with Carneiro stringing together combinations that left Niinimaki looking lost and confused heading into the second frame.

Rony Jason A fan favorite has been forced off next week’s card in Brazil. According to a report from Brazil’s Combate news site, Rony Jason (14-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) it out of his featherweight bout against Tom Niinimaki (21-7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 58. In Jason’s place will step promotional newcomer Renato Carneiro (8-0-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC). The UFC has not yet made an official announcement about the fight change.

TULSA – Chas Skelly struck quickly and eventually forced a tap-out from Tom Niinimaki for yet another submission win on his resume. Skelly (12-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) closed the distance early, took the fight to the mat, and then eventually locked on a fight-ending rear-naked choke on Niinimaki (21-7-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in the first round. The featherweight bout opened the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 49 at BOK Center in Tulsa. It aired on FOX Sports 1 after prelims on FOX Sports 2 and UFC Fight Pass.

The UFC has signed a new featherweight, and he’ll be put to work right away in two weeks in Berlin. Unbeaten Swedish fighter Niklas Backstrom (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has joined the promotion, and he will step in for Thiago Tavares (18-5-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) against Tom Niinimaki (21-5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 41 in Germany. UFC officials announced the news and the new booking overnight. No official word was given on the nature of Tavares’ removal from the fight
